Is that weird?

Re: Is that weird?

  • @tuarceatha - hmmm, interesting about your nails. I need to see this in person to determine the level of weirdness.

Why I'm weird - if I sleep in a room that is less than 72 degrees, I get a head cold. My parents thought I was making it up, but after years of trial and error (and buying several space heaters), my husband agrees it's better to not let me sleep in a cold room.

Another one - even if it's hot hot hot, I have to sleep with something covering me. Ditto if I'm taking a nap. I cannot sleep otherwise.

    Still here and still fabulous!

  • I love sleeping in the cold, but I normally run hot. FI says cuddling with me makes his skin feel sunburned. What a wuss.

Weird thing about me: I like to play with the corner of paper. I will seriously do it all day. I like the almost-tickling sensation it gives me on my fingers. Maybe my fingertips are just really sensitive? I dunno. I've done it my whole life though, and my mom and FI always point it out and laugh. FI jokes that our paper anniversary is going to be amazing for me.

  • I'm not sure if it is weird but I have one quirk. V calls it "fluffing the hair". I always have to mess with my hair by pushing it up and flipping it ha. My hair is kinda afroish.

  • @GoldenPenguin it's okay! I was super busy running around seeing family and friends and even had a business lunch/meeting on Friday at a very well known company (that I won't name) in Malta. But I really wanted a storm on Friday and I didn't get one :(. The weather was nice for my friends on Saturday fortunately.

Is there more than one thing in Malta??

How do you know she wasn't having a business lunch at the Malta Drive-In or the Speedway? There's lots of things in Malta.

Bahahaha, I'm trying so hard not to let myself talk to the IV pumps. I definitely talk to inanimate objects everywhere else, but I'm sure my patients are scared enough of their little student nurse without me cursing out the hospital equipment!

It's beautiful up there. Easy access to Saratoga and the lake, quick drives to Albany and Lake George, and lots and lots of new housing options because of Global Foundries. They've really developed the area a lot, and it's pretty fabulous.

@CLoGreenEyes Oh, I point it out to the patients all the time.  "By the way, your nurse is weird and talks to IV pumps, but trust me, you'll be yelling at them too by the end of your stay."  I once had a patient with an ENORMOUS daily levemir dose, that required 2 insulin pens to give.  It took me a little while to do the math in my head to set each pen and add up to the correct dose.  When I had the second nurse sign off on it, she thought I added wrong, so we got out the marker and did the math on the patient's dry erase board.  I then turned to him and said "Does it make you nervous that your nurses are having so much trouble with simple math?  Because it should!"  Luckily, he knew I was joking :/

  • @lovemyrunner, hey, at least y'all were actually DOING the math instead of the second nurse taking it for granted. Somehow it's scarier to not double-triple check everything. BTW, I may be stealing your disclaimer for the future; that's clever!
  • Not weird to me- I love weather.  Super hot, super cold, raining, storming, or snowing hard.  The more extreme the better.  This winter was the best one I can remember.

  • As I'm packing up the apartment, I've rediscovered something weird about myself. I cannot use a tape gun to save my life. WHY ARE THESE SO DIFFICULT TO USE? I either get the tape tangled onto itself or the gun, or I somehow get the tape out of the dispenser/cutter area and have to use scissors to cut it. There may be a tape-gun-sized hole in my wall by the end of the week.

  • Bandit brand tape/dispensers are the BEST!

They used to be yellow, but now I think they are often blue, possibly with USPS logo.

@Kelani23 Malta is a really nice area, with a lot to do nearby. Where do you live now?
And @GoldenPenguin got the company right. Told you I didn't need to name it ;).

ETA: I however would have LOVED a business lunch at the Drive-In or the Speedway! I have many awesome childhood memories from those two places.

  • I knew what company you meant, I thought you didn't want to name it! lol

I live in Poughkeepsie, but SO works in East Fishkill.

I don't really intend to sell my house to move up there, so I don't know what we would do... The semiconductor industry is too fickle to bank on, real estate wise, IMO.  My ex got laid off twice in the 4 years I knew him, and once before that!  I don't trust it enough to give up my house that I happen to love, and is close to my family.

So I will keep my head in the sand until we get to that point :-P

@Kelani23, I completely understand with the semiconductor industry. My BF also was laid off in the industry with another well known company in East Fishkill, so I completely understand. It's why I moved from Albany to California, as all of the good jobs are on the West Coast. Fortunately I was able to get my BF a job at my company as well, and he moved here with me. It isn't necessarily the industry itself, but the East Coast companies don't seem to do well. However, after my visit to Malta, I will say that I was impressed with that company, and it might honestly be the best option in the area (despite the issue of having to move). Honestly, the semiconductor industry is doing really well actually as a whole. It's just a lot of the manufacturing can be done overseas cheaper (as with any industry), so the companies here that are in the manufacturing business can't keep up as well. My company doesn't do it's own manufacturing; we pay companies like the one in Malta to manufacture our designs for us, so we have actually been growing. That being said, that company in Malta already has overseas facilities, and can fund a fab here in the U.S. as well. You probably won't want to read this, but knowing the industry first hand, if your SO works for the other big player in the area that I am thinking of, GF/Malta might be a good option. That particular other large company seems to be trying to get out of the semiconductor field entirely, in favor of cloud computing and the servers business. ETF: gahhhh I had paragraphs!!!! I can't seem to fix it :(.

  • SO's degree is in mechanical engineering, and this is his first job in the industry (only 18 months in), so I'm hoping he will remember that his skills have other practical applications that don't involve following fabs across the country!  His last job was completely different, but he did just get a promotion at his company, so we'll see how it goes.  He doesn't actually expect me to go with him to Malta, he thinks he should get a small rental up there, since I hardly see him when he works anyway since the shifts are long and overnight.

However, it's all better than his original plan of being a merchant marine, so I'm eternally thankful for that not working out!!

  • @aurorarose41 & @kelani23 - they're also expanding the Nanotech campus at UAlbany AGAIN, so that could be an option too! They just built a huge expansion a couple years ago, and I drove by it the other day, and there was more construction going on.

  • Re: Semiconductors

FI's degree is in EE, and he works at a contracting firm that deals with semiconductors. He's been contracted out to a large, international engineering company 100% of the time he's worked there, and in that time we've seen a lot of a layoffs at that company. Huge layoffs actually. Since he's a contractor, the departments are less likely to take his job since he costs the company less overall, and even if they do decide not to renew his contract for one job, he can easily jump into another one at any of the large engineering companies nearby, or he can switch to projects that pay a lump sum up front, or he can move to a different team within the company where he currently works. It's worked out well for him over the past 3 years or so. His salary is quite competitive, although he doesn't get benefits through work. Plus, when his contract is up for renewal, he's able to negotiate very large raises... His last pay increase was $10k more per year. If he were an actual employee at that engineering company, his raises each year would be capped at a much lower rate. Contract work can be a great way to stay working in a shaky field like semiconductors, although it can also be stressful because your income isn't necessarily guaranteed from year to year. Could be something for some of y'all to look into?

  • @eilis1228 wow I didn't realize that contractors have more flexibility! My BF and I both have degrees in EE, but we are salaried at a huge company (that is still hiring; layoffs don't seem to be a thing that will happen anytime soon, but you never know), and our raises were about $2k each. However, our review periods are bi-annually, and the spring review period always has smaller raises and bonuses. So I am interested to see what happens this fall. But that is definitely something to keep in mind for BF! I am most likely going to switch over into patents and hopefully become a patent attorney for the company (they have a training program for EE's!), but if I don't end up doing that I will also keep contracting in the back of my mind in case layoffs do happen in the future.
