Thoughts on registering for China...

Ok, I'm totally torn on whether we should register for China... I have family and friends on both sides of the fence on this one.  A lot of people say I will regret it if I don't register for it...but then a lot of people are also saying that it's a waste unless you know you are going to use it.

What are you thoughts on China???

We didn't register for it.  Neither FI nor myself grew up in families where we had and/or used china.  I think if it's something your family did a lot when you were a kid you might regret it a little bit more down the road...

I also would have felt kind of guilty registering for dishes that were over $100/setting, but mostly because stuff like that just isn't too common in my "circle"

I'm in almost the exact same boat.  I don't think we will be doing it for a couple of reasons.  First, like pp said, my family never used (nor owned) china when I was growing up.  Second, I think it's too expensive for my family and friends as well, especially considering I'm just graduating from college and so my friends are all in a similar boat.  That leads to my last reason, I cannot see FI and I using china in the next 5 years, maybe even 10 years as we will be in graduate school and not even be in the position to host fancy dinner parties.

I think you will only feel bad about it because other people will make you, if that makes sense.  It kind of seems like you like the idea of it, but don't want people to spend the money or you don't see the usefulness of it.  You should do what will work best for your situation.  If you regret it in 10 years, buy some as an anniversay gift!

Also, I'm more interested in trying to get a kitchenaid mixer/dyson as my "expensive" items over china.  They will be WAY more useful in my life, especially now!

I don't need china at this point in my life either.  What I ended up doing was registering for those square, white plates that they sell at Kohls.  They are casual enough to use for hamburgers and fries, but they can also be dressed up using pretty napkins and chargers.  I know that they aren't "china", but they can still be used for holiday dinners and won't look out of place.  Plus, they are a fraction of the cost of china :)  Maybe do something like that, just find a neutral dish set that can be used for many different events!

<div>Oh man, I got the KitchenAid for Christmas and broke down and bought myself the Dyson on Black Friday (apparently I have no impulse control at 4 am, who knew??).  They are seriously my two most favorite household items ever.  </div><div>
</div><div>As far as "china" is concerned, we registered for Noritake Colorwave, which is casual enough for every day use, but it's still nice enough to set a pretty table for dinner parties.  Plus it's only $35/place setting!</div>

We registered for it. We like to eat and entertain. :-P But if we don't get it I won't be terribly dissappointed... Can always buy it later on.
I agree that there are lots of others things I'd prefer to get over it, like a Dyson Sweet Charade! (do you love it?!)

We registered, also. I grew up with it and I know I will use it eventually. Even if it's only once or twice a year. I like the way it feels to take out the "good dishes" for a fancy celebration. However, I also liked the idea of registering for the plain white plates that can be used casually or dressed up. However, I already have a full set of Fiestaware, which isn't exactly made to look classy for fancy dinners... :) Our china is only $70/set and if we don't get it, it won't be that big of a deal, but it would be nice.

Thanks everyone!  I think we've decided to nix the China idea once and for all.  Thanks for helping me to realize what I already knew--we'd rarely use the stuff!

I defintely like the nice white plate idea too!  It lets you be creative and constantly change to fit the theme of the party.

<p>I have been looking at BB&B recently to look at the Noritake colorwave (thanks fro the tip SweetCharade!) and discovered their "casual" china.  That might a good route for anyone who wants "nicer" looking dishes without the cost.  I think for a 4 place setting it starts around $20 and goes up depending on the style and brand.  They have some really great designs!  I think we might register for those and then get some nice chargers to "dress up" our settings whenever we get the chance to entertain.

I LOVE the idea of the chargers to dress it up.  I will totally be stealing that idea!</p>

We did not register for it because there is a lot of China in both of our families that we have been told will become heirloom pieces someday.  I prefer to wait and have China that has sentimental meaning behind it rather than receive new china.  Plus, China is expensive and there were many other items that we needed from our gift registry.  Hope this helps!
