Be my interior decorators

FI and I have decided to resign our lease and are working on re-doing our apartment. We've finished the the dining room and are now working on the living room.  I wanted to change the colors in the living to different blues. We bought the octopus print I posted in the weekend thread and a painting on canvas that is dark blues and teals. We also bought some blue throw pillows. Our couch is brown.  We are wanting to paint the living room and add curtains to the sliding door and small window above our built-in bookshelf but I have no idea what to do.

Our living room is painted a light beige/sand color right now and has white trimming. We have a fire place that sticks out a little and a built in bookshelf on one side and the sliding door that goes out to our balcony on the other. My first thought was to paint the wall with the fireplace and then add blue curtains that matched. Or should I do white curtains with blue wall? Or should I not paint anything and add blue curtains for color? Or should I paint the entire side of that apartment blue, not just the fire place?  I CLEARLY NEED HELP.

ETA: I deleted the Christmas picture of the living room because FI sent me a better one on his lunch break. Posted below.

This was my original idea:

  • Are you planning to white out the beige walls if you use the picture above as an inspiration?  The beige isn't too bad so if you don't feel like painting I would do blue curtains and then get a lighter area rug to break up the difference between the dark sofa and carpet.

I plan on keeping the beige walls. I like the idea of just doing curtains and an area rug!

  • First off, you can paint? I'm jealous! Our leases didn't allow us to paint or do anything - it was all "remodeling."

I'd be inclined to do blue curtains and a light blue area rug.
  • @keptinstitches we can as long as we primer it before we leave :)

  • Yeah, I was going to say that keeping the room a neutral colour would probably be easiest AND it would mean that you could change up the décor again some other time if you want to. I think the idea of dark blue curtains (maybe with a pattern?) and a lighter area rug and throw pillows would be great.

If you DO want to paint, just doing the bit around the fireplace would look great; I'm a big fan of accent walls.

  • @lmcooper86 I definitely like the idea of doing darker blue curtains with a pattern.

With what you've mentioned already - I would probably look at doing 'Coastal' or 'Beachy' tones - loght blues, tans and whites.  If you stick with that type of palette - your new octopus print will fit right in!!

  • If I were you, I would keep the beige color and paint the area where the fireplace is either a turquoise or teal color. Something that you could buy accessories for to make the room pop.

For example, our LR is grey and we have it decorated (except for couches) in black or grey. Our kitchen which is the room next to the LR will be a turquoise color. Our accent colors for the LR will be turquoise since it blends in with the kitchen.

Our bedroom is going to have three beige walls and one dark purple wall. We registered for a black and white bedroom set, but eventually I'll get accent pillows in dark purple and beige.

I LOVE having pops of color in a room, it's more interesting to me.

  • @dignity thats kind of what I had in my head!! I really love those colors together.
@buddysmom80 I like the turquoise or teal idea. The octopus print we bought and the painting on canvas have teal/turquoise in them so I think that might look good.

You can do a fun tone on tone pattern curtain so that it doesn't feel so BLUE or too boring like these:

and then a lighter area right to bring some lightness and ground your sofa.  I like this rug because there's still some movement in there and your other accents like pillows will pull the colors but it's not a big overwhelming pattern (ignore the green in it, it was more for style than exact color).

ETA: you can go the other way too and do a solid curtain and bold pattern on the floor.

  • I really, really like the idea of painting the area around the fireplace blue, and keeping the rest of the walls beige. I wish I could paint my apartment! I would do a lighter blue since that would be easier to paint over when you move, but it sounds like it could be a lot of fun having that accent wall! I also feel like having one wall a different color, a lighter color, helps make the room feel bigger. Maybe getting a fun patterned rug in neutral tones would add a splash as well :)

YAY, this is the color scheme in my house!

Step foot in a Pier 1, and pretty much anywhere you look, you will have answers to your "need teal" dilemma!  I loooove Pier 1!

This is one of my favorite things I own:image

My curtains aren't really what you're looking for, but I'm sure Pier 1 has some great options.
