Picnics

So I am thinking of planning a picnic outing for DH and I. I think it will be an affordable and fun date! I am trying to plan the food, but I am not very creative. So far I am thinking of egg salad sandwiches, veggies and hummus, fruit, and sangria. Do you ever go on picnics? What are some of your favourite picnic foods?

Re: Picnics

  • We'll bring chips or pretzels along with items you listed off. Or mac or potato salad. I loooooove picnic food.
  • Just make super sure you keep the egg salad really cold! Frozen grapes make a good ice pack, and then you can toss them into the sangria.

I go all out. I bring a really pretty tablecloth but another blanket to put under it in case the ground is wet. I bring my waterford crystal.

    -wine
    -cheese and crackers
    -hummus and veggies
    -sushi

    -throw pillows for lounging.

There are also companies that will do pop up picnics for you. Not sure where you are located but my H did one for me one time. It was amazing. It was like a date out of the bachelor. The company goes and sets up chairs and a table and pretty vintage stuff and throw blankets and candles and they deliver the food and set up the wine, a wine bucket, opener etc. And then you show up and your picnic is waiting for you. And then at a set time they come back and do the tear down. It's pretty cool.
  • I might be married to a chef, but our go to picnic lunch is hitting up our favorite sandwich place.  Throw in some chips and booze in our cooker and we are good.

    Boring I know.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • My issue is that I hate eating outside. Bugs, wind, bugs, the sun, bugs, birds...Bugs. I also break out in a rash in the sun, so I avoid it like the plague. I pretty much only eat indoors. If I'm packing a to go lunch, my favorite is a European style farmer's lunch. Good bread, cold meat of some kind, good cheese, fruit (berries in particular), and I sub white wine for beer.
  • H & I had a picnic date long ago!  We are very much over due for another one!  I like to make fried chicken tenders.  But instead of doing an egg wash, I roll the chicken tenders in honey and then breading.  And then fry like normal.  Fried chicken is one of those things I can eat cold though. I cooked them up the night before and had them in the fridge overnight.  They tasted wonderful!
  • I can't believe I hadn't thought about dessert! Lemon bars are a great idea :) Hmm, some sort of side like a salad or chips would probably be nice, too.

OMG lolo that is pure genius! I will totally be stealing that idea. I love it!!!

  • @lc07 I had never heard of that. I will look into it. DH loves sushi, me not so much, but it would be easy enough to pick some up for him.

lol, Lynda. There is absolutely no shame in that! No muss, no fuss!

It's not for everyone, Rebecca. DH and I love the great outdoors, especially since we live in Canada. Carpe Diem in the summer! In the winter, not so much.

That sounds delicious @OliveOilsMom. I may have to try that, even I don't necessarily make it for this particular picnic.
