How often do you wash your hair?

I wash mine every day or every other day. It's very fine and gets oily (and tangled) fast. I'm trying yet again to train it to go every three days. When I would try to train my hair before, I would not get it wet in between washes or do anything with it. This time I am trying to rinse it and scratch at my head every day with water only, and then to condition only the ends. What always stopped me before was wanting freshly styled hair everyday, which I can do if I rinse it. This also takes care of work out hair! I will succeed this time. I will.

I want prettier hair, dammit!

Re: How often do you wash your hair?

  • Daily. It's just gross if I don't. I have very coarse hair (think animal guard hair) and it gets oily if I don't wash it. Then I get zits in my hair, which should just not happen.
  • I have to wash it every day. I wake up every morning with so much grease in my hair and even just rinsing doesn't take it all out. What I really need to do to hlp save my hair is stop blow drying and flat ironing it every day. That's what is doing the most damage to my hair.
  • I also have to wash my hair every day.
  • Pretty much daily.  Some times every other day if I feel lazy in the morning and then I just throw it up in a bun for work.  I can't go much longer then every other day because then my hair just feels gross.

  • Well, ladies, I've read that grease and hair washing daily are a vicious cycle. I intend to truly find out if you wash your hair less, it gets less oily. Find out for me, that is. FI's family have very textured, thick hair that they all wash like once or twice a week. Their hair is all gorgeous and doesn't ever smell or look oiley. His family has amazing genes, though.

  • I wash my hair about once week or every 5 days. I have super thick and coarse hair so if I wash it too much it gets oil because I can't get all of the shampoo and conditioner out.

If you are trying to train your hair and do fresh hairstyles every day, instead of rinsing every day, try to start out the first day or so with start hair, curl it the next day (the "dirty-ness" will help hold curl and you won't notcie the oil-ness of it as much) and the a messy ponytail the last day.

  • Since I discovered dry shampoo for brunettes, I can go up to three days.  My hair is very long and fine, and there's a lot of it.  At first, I would have to wash it every other day, then I realized I was using too much coconut oil and that was the culprit.  I started putting it up at night too in order to keep it off my face.  I think it's helping with my acne.

Day one it's down, day two and three are updos.  I'm trying out new braids and stuff so I think my hair and I are finally becoming friends ^_^

  • @larrygaga My sister can go a few days in between washings and you'd never be able to tell. She's got this thick, gorgeous hair that I'm so envious of. I think for her, the skipping washing does help.
  • Well my hair is differnt. I'm biracial so I never knew what to do with my hair. Mom washed daily, dad's side said weekly. I settled on every 3 days. My hair won't get greasy but the curls won't hold up well past three days. I can go longer if I wear it straight but I rarely do that.
  • Every other day I have fine thin hair

  • I too have heard that washing and greasy hair is a vicious cycle, but as someone who works out on an almost daily basis and sweats like crazy, I just couldn't imagine not washing my hair regularly.

If that's you in the picture, then that's the reason I want to skip washes. Your hair is so pretty!!!

My hair is fine and lank, and I have to tease it to get any volume. On the second day of no washing, my hair looks like I stepped out of the 80's and people say I have a lion's mane (it's red). I want the happy medium, please.

  • Yeah, that is me, thank you! Mine is a mane too @larrygaga‌ it's a love hate relationship.

I'm getting a keratin treatment tomorrow that is supposed to smooth/defrizz it but I'm afraid it will make it not so curly. I'm loo
  • I have tried SO HARD to go a few days in between washing my hair. Since I heard that a) it’s a cycle of washing & oil production and b) the oils are good for your hair so you should keep them around for a day or so.

Unfortunately my hair is very fine and very long so if I go more than a day or so without washing it looks terrible. That and the scalp acne. Ish.

So, I wash my hair every other day. Sometimes for frequently if there's sweat involved (hot weather, exercise, you know what... LOL).

  • I wash my hair every other day. Sometimes I can get by one extra day by using dry shampoo on my roots but I don't often do that. And I feel really self conscious if my hair looks greasy.
  • I also wash my hair every other day. I can't go any longer than that without it starting to itch, which I just can't deal with!

  • I wash it about twice a week on average. I can go longer when I pull it up/back more, because if it's down I'm constantly pushing it away from my face and the oils on my hands and forehead make it dirty. Even when I work out I find that if I take my hair down (so it doesn't get creased in the ponytail) and shake it out so the sweat dries (sometimes I'll hit it with the blow dryer), it doesn't make my hair look dirty. Sweat only smells when it mixes with your natural skin bacteria, so this way it doesn't stink.

  • Every other day, unless I do something that makes me sweat a lot, then I will wash it again.

  • Every night.

  • I try not to wash my hair much. Maybe every 2-3 days. My hair is awful if I wash it anymore than that. It doesn't get greasy so I'm able go a couple days without washing it. Plus, my hair is colored so I try not to wash it often so that my color doesn't fade as quickly.

  • Every other night. Unless I work out, in which case it gets washed that night matter what.
  • Pretty much every day, especially if I work out.  I have thick, straight hair.  Honestly it never really occurred to me to take a shower without washing my hair.  I don't know what would happen if I stopped washing it.

I'm guilty sometimes of skipping a shower the next morning if I haven't worked out-- I just don't get that icky after only 24 hours.  My hair usually looks fine the second day if I do that, but sometimes I'll put some dry shampoo in it to make it smell nice.

I just had my keratin done again (2nd time) and its a life saver!  My hair dries pretty straight if I just brush it out after a shower but yet it looks nice if I add some mouse to wear it curly/wavy.  Also holds a curling iron curl  nicely.  The entire time I was in Aruba for our HM I never had to use a blow dryer or flat iron even though it was so humid.

I really can't recommend it enough.  The first time I got it (back in Feb..I should have listened and did it sooner) my normally dry hair was greasy.  My cousin (my hairdresser) had me switch to a different shampoo and that took care of that problem.

I have pretty thick but not coarse hair.  Hopefully it works wonders for you too.  I just invested in a dry shampoo for blondes (I've never used dry shampoo before).  I'll probably need to use it tomorrow.  I'll let you know how it goes.

  • Now that I work from home I wash it a lot less.  Normally I wash it Tuesdays, Thursdays and both weekends days (I work a seasonal job outside of the house on the weekends).   Once the seasonal job ends I will go back to every other day unless I have an event to go to.

I never go longer than every other day.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I have a lot of very fine hair that gets greasy like nobody's business. I usually wash it daily. Like @Maggie0829, if I am just not feeling it, I will throw it up in a bun (like I did this morning). That hides the dirtiness. I just can't go longer without washing. I look nasty.

  • I have to wash my hair everyday day too. I have thick "fluffy" curly hair. It doesn't look bad when I wake up but it feels awful. I can't stand it when I have greasy/oily hair. I usually do shampoo and a little conditioner. Afterwards I put some defrizz curly hair products. I don't blow dry my hair much expect my bangs. Those jerks become oily if I don't. Sometimes I blow dry it/air dry it then use my curling iron. But that's only when I have a lot of time and want to feel fancy.  So at least I don't put a lot of heat damage on my hair!

  • I wash my hair about every 3-4 days. Mostly form laziness, my Mom always told me every other day. And growing up we had a rule about always washing our hair on Saturdays (I suppose so it would look nice at church? or maybe cause my sister and I spent Saturday nights at our Aunts and showered/bathed before we went)

  • I shampoo every 5-7 days, but I have "mixed", super curly hair. And if I take my time and actually style my hair after washing, I can usually wear it down (and have it look good) for about 3-4 days.
  • I've recently discovered the curling wand and in using that I dont seem to need to wash my hair as much. I still tend to wash every night but I can go 2 days if I want too. I dont know what it is about curly hair that it either just doesnt get as greasy or hides the grease better. Day 2 curls actually usually lay nicer. I love that thing
