St. Thomas car rental?

My FI and I are going to St. Thomas for our honeymoon. I was wondering today whether a car rental would be necessary. It's a small island, so I assume we can get around easily by either walking to things close by or maybe using cabs if they're available. Thoughts?

Re: St. Thomas car rental?

  • My dad has a time share on St. Thomas, and when we went down there he rented a car.  You could take a cab around, or if you're planning to stay mostly on resort you can deal without a car...but it was really nice to be able to just go wherever we wanted whenever we felt like it.  Do be advised that they drive on the left side of the road though if you decide to rent a car.  We visited two countries with left-side driving on our Honeymoon and rented cars and it was fine...just make sure you are comfortable with driving on the left side on some windy island roads before you go that route.

  • Ha, good to know! I'm sure I'd quickly figure out what side they drive on, but I'd prefer not to be surprised.
  • Depends on where you are staying....... If you are in the West End , you are a long way from Charlotte Amalie..... But there are cabs to take you to the ferry( for St John/ Jost) and a few restaurants... We've been lots of times and never got a car.... We did a day rental on St John for a day trip.
  • depends on where you are staying.     Major hotels, you probably are fine without one.   Villas and smaller condo type places you might benefit from a rental car.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I would definitely rent a car. The island isn't that big but there most things you have to drive to. We drove to different beach every day. Taxis will add up quickly if you need to take them everywhere.

  • Thanks for the tips! I'll look into car rental options for a few days at least.
