Wedding Dress disasters

So I ordered my Dress last august from Alfred Angelos. Loved the dress!!! I took it in for alterations just to add a layer of glitter tulle under two layers of white tulle and to add a bustle. Well I saw my dress last thursday. I have seen better 5th grader sewing projects! They told me after I had already picked up the dress that there hadn't been enough glitter tulle to do what I wanted, but it still looked beautiful. Well they paneled the tulle so that there was no glitter tulle on the sides. There were bright white thick stitches against the tulle and also near the bodice. You could see the stitches more than the glitter tulle! At the bodice the stitches were falling out and the tulle was coming off. Plus the stitching could be seen through all the layers of tulle. My wedding is in 2.5 weeks. They say I should have my dress by a week from friday. Is it reasonable that I want the price back for the alterations that were paid and also a little back on my dress? Not talking a whole lot but a little something and also I never got my preservation kit that I paid for. My dad used an entire paycheck to get my dress and accessories and he doesn't like seeing me cry because my dress is falling apart in the bag three weeks before my wedding.

  • I don't think you should get back money on your dress (that came in fine right?) but I do think that they should refund part of the alteration costs for the addition of the glitter tulle.

I would also tell them that you have not received your preservation kit and ask where it is.

Honestly, if the alterations were as bad as you say they were I would have taken my dress elsewhere and had another seamstress do the work.

  • I agree with Maggie.  I don't think you should ask for money back on the dress.  You did ask to have it altered.  I do think the alterations itself are another story.  I wouldn't want to pay for something that looked the way you described.  I might also consider finding a different seamstress.  If it looked that bad, I wouldn't want them touching it.
As for the preservation kit... just ask what has happened to it.
    Good luck!
  • My question is then what do I do if it isn't 100% fixed or there are holes from the previous stitches? There isn't a way to fix the original tulle or the Satin with out really replacing the whole bottom of the dress. and from what it sounds like that is not the plan

You need to take your dress to a different seamstress pronto.  I am not sure what exactly they did to your dress so it is hard to say.  Do you have a picture of the poor alterations?  And if this glitter tulle was added underneath a few layers of the other tulle then any tiny holes from previous stitches really won't be noticeable.

For what it is worth I had a bustle done to my dress (satin material) and two buttons were sewn almost directly where my ass would have been in plain sight.  My Mom took the buttons off and no holes were left.
