Theme opinions? Drive-In?

Well my fiance and I have bonded over movies and have a collection of movie stubs from the time we've been together. We aren't big dancers so we began toying with the idea of a brunch wedding to avoid that or maybe a more gourmet cake and punch. But then it hit me: drive in theatre theme. We considered going to an actual drive-in for the reception but realized my parents have a HUGE backyard! So the main bullet points of my plan:

-ceremony starts an hour before sunset
-bridesmaids in black dresses and pink ladies jackets (like from grease)
-groomsmen in t birds jackets
-I wear a feminine leather jacket (which I plan to irregardless)
-director chairs reserved and decorated for those family members who have passed away
-cars parked in backyard to sit in/on hood for movie and the option of chairs to watch on huge projection screen
-we provide Blankets and pillows for comfort
-soda fountain provided and beer, water, and tea
-food will be popcorn, soft pretzels, nachos, hot dog bar, candy bar, fruits and veggies with dips (like a drive-in)
-we have cake cutting, first dance and father/daughter dance then mingle until the movie begin (which will have the dancing hot dog intermission like a real drive-in)
-favors will be movie theatre candy boxes

Re: Theme opinions? Drive-In?

  • And as you can guess grease will be a movie played. That's my pick! My fiance will pick the other.
  • I don't dislike it, but I'd rather socialize at a wedding. Watching movies kinda kills the ability to socialize.

I'd stick with a brunch or cake and punch reception (with movie theme touches), and then maybe do an after-party that evening with the movies.

I like it as a theme in theory, but I really wouldn't want to stay to watch two movies, to be honest. That might be coloured by my either a) having two young kids in tow, or b) having paid a babysitter which I seldom do even to watch movies (one at a time!) that I'm actually interested in, but that's my honest answer, anyway. A lot of people might be physically uncomfortable sitting on either cars or blankets, too. I do really like the food choices.

  • -ceremony starts an hour before sunset  Sounds great!!
-bridesmaids in black dresses and pink ladies jackets (like from grease) I think it might be easier to skip jackets & just do pink scarfs & flowers or pink shawls
-groomsmen in t birds jackets   Not my thing, I think too much to the theme & will be expensive, have a plan B in place just in case
-I wear a feminine leather jacket (which I plan to irregardless) Make sure to get a few pics without jacket too
-director chairs reserved and decorated for those family members who have passed away Make sure to talk to immediate family about this idea. I've heard that some people can get very emotional when they see things to remember a loved one that isn't there for a major event.
-cars parked in backyard to sit in/on hood for movie and the option of chairs to watch on huge projection screen I would skip cars, they take up lots of room, plus if people sit in the cars, they won't be able to hear the movie. I would opt just for chairs & blankets
-we provide Blankets and pillows for comfort - Love
-soda fountain provided and beer, water, and tea  - Very Cute
-food will be popcorn, soft pretzels, nachos, hot dog bar, candy bar, fruits and veggies with dips (like a drive-in) Love it, since you are having a later ceremony, you can get away without doing a traditional dinner
-we have cake cutting, first dance and father/daughter dance then mingle until the movie begin (which will have the dancing hot dog intermission like a real drive-in) - Awesome
-favors will be movie theatre candy boxes - Awesome idea

Like a PP said, don't be surprised if a lot of people leave before or during the 2nd feature. By time you get to that second movie it will probably be around 11:00 pm so people with kids (if kids are being invited) may have to get them home to be, or get home to their sitter.

One last thing, I hate to rain on your great idea, but what about rain? You're plan is awesome, but it won't work if it rains. What will your plan B? Also other things to think of - do your parents have enough bathrooms to accomodate the amount of people you will be inviting and what is the parking situation like in your neighborhood? Can your guests park on your parents property or street or will they have to park somewhere else & hike it?

  • I like the idea of having the ceremony with a cake/punch reception, with a movie afterwards for those who are interested in attending. No worrying about parking, noise etc.

Are there any old/vintage theaters in your area? Not just talking 'movie' theaters, but any theater or even nicer college/high school auditoriums. I know some can be rented out as a space, so you could have your wedding ceremony on stage with everyone seated in the audience, and then a cake/punch reception in the lobby area/adjacent room.
