And this is why I hate going to the dentist...vent/rant

So feel free to ignore this but I just had to get it out somewhere and be frustrated for a few minutes and move on.  So I hate the dentist, it gives me wicked anxiety etc but I try my best to go regularly, or close to it, anyways and had an appointment this past week.  So a little back story, in High School I had braces, the guy that did them pretty much screwed up, had me go through an invasive oral surgery but chose not to remove my baby tooth in front that I now still have, he never fixed my underbite so I still had jaw issues and my retainers didn't fit right.  So my teeth are now no longer straight, I've started to have a lot worse jaw pain all that fun stuff and I hate that way my teeth look...but I just suck it up because it is what it is.

Well it turns out my braces caused gum recession(apparently this is actually common?) and I have to go see a periodontist....except my insurance won't even cover a consult never mind the grafting surgery I would need.  And 2 of my front teeth are already loose because of the recession(although 1 is a baby tooth so really that was bound to happen eventually).  So they basically told me I need to have the grafting surgery(which freaks me the hell out) or it is a matter of when my 2 front teeth fall out, not if.  But of course the surgery will cost at least $3,000 which I can not even close to afford.

So at the moment I am just frustrated, upset and trying to figure out what to do.....and though it is not the dentists fault..I hate going to the dentist, at least I could have been in denial for awhile haha  So thanks for listening to me bitch.

  • OH MY GOD.

I hate the dentist too, haha, so I can commiserate there. I have to go soon before my mom's insurance dies on me, but I'm putting it off as long as I can. I guess I'll be making an appointment for next week.

THAT SUCKS ABOUT THE SURGERY THOUGH OMG I would be having heart palpitations. And also looking at the statute of limitations on suing my orthodontist, hahahaha....

  • The seriously sucks. I'm guessing too much time has gone by to sue the Orthodontist.

  • OMG-- I literally have the exact same issue with my two front teeth, because of my shitty orthodontist.  EXACTLY the same thing.  They are also already loose.

I was advised to just get implants because the grafting surgery is at best a temporary solution.  It's going to be so expensive, and I want it done before the wedding.  Well, there's $8,000 on top of the wedding budget we now need to come up with.

I'm starting a new job in November and hoping to God their dental insurance is really good.

From what I remember the orthodontist was someone like my uncle had gone to school with or something like that so that was how we got recommended.  And after over 2 years he was then talking about removing teeth and doing x, y z and my mom said no way since at least my teeth were straight and keeping them on another 2 plus years would have caused permanent issues.  My brother went to a different orthodontist and faired much better.

Yea I wish I had known this was such an issue when I was still on my parents insurance.  Now I'm on Masshealth so it covers the bare minimum.  I've been looking into dental schools but I don't know, I also really need to get atleast my top teeth semi fixed since they are starting to overlap, but don't know if it will cause more issues.  Stupid dentistry.

@JCbride2015  I've heard of a few people having similar types of issues because of braces related issues.  They didn't mention anything to me about implants, but I will definitely ask about that/look into it because that actually makes more sense for at least one of the teeth since its a baby tooth and I'm 27, every dentist is shocked its still there haha  If you are going to get an implant, definitely get your other teeth whitened so they kind of "blend" better.  That's what was recommended to me when they thought they were going to have to cap a tooth.

Nice to hear I'm not the only one at least haha.  They've given me xanax for dentists appointments and it helps zero, and I was knocked out but woke up during both my oral surgery and wisdom teeth removal so I realllly don't want any dental surgery although it seems inevitable.  And call me vain, shallow etc(and I know I have quite some time before I have to worry about this)....but I will not be getting married with my 2 front teeth gone.

  • haha @CMGragain and that's exactly why even thought I hate it, it stresses me out, I would do anything to get out of it...I still go.  And its at least better then when I was younger, none of my teeth fell out on their own, they were all removed.  But yep definitely going to keep going for the cleanings no matter how much I think dentists work for the devil.

  • I'm weird but I enjoy going to the dentist. I like knowing my teeth are healthy and they always feel so clean afterwards! But I need to start flossing.

  • I feel for you.  I married a man with soft teeth.  Earlier in our marriage we went without many things to pay for his teeth.  Most of them are fake, now.
I'm an old lady from before water was fluoridated.  People in my generation have a mouthful of fillings and crown, which aren't covered under dental insurance, either.  I was amazed at the difference with my own children.  Almost no cavities during their childhood!
One of the biggest differences between life in America/Canada and the developing countries is the availability of dental treatment.  In our ancestors' day, most woman were toothless by the age of 40.  We are blessed.

  • I have incredibly soft teeth and am horrified of the dentist. They give me horse tranquilizers and I still throw temper tantrums that a toddler would be impressed by everytime I go.
  • I have super-soft teeth, too. Just got my first root canal at 25 - my mom had her first at 24 so that's where I get it. I hate going to the dentist too because no matter what I do, no matter how much I brush, floss, chew anti-cavity gum, etc. I always have at least 1 cavity per year :/
  • @JCbride2015 I meant to ask, do you also have an exposed nerve/nerves because of it?  Lately thats been driving me nuts no idea what to do to help it though haha

Nope, no exposed nerves.  I have zero pain.

They discovered the condition in November and I'm putting off having anything done about it until I start my job and get new insurance this November.  So it will be a year that I've known about it until I get it fixed.

Honestly if I hadn't seen the X ray, I'd still never know anything was wrong.

I wonder what the statute of limitations is. I'm considering taking a former dentist to court over botched fillings that I'm pretty certain I didn't need. I now have a cracked tooth. Funny how none of my other teeth have any issues-just the one he messed with.

I feel your pain; I also had gum recession because of braces and had a gum graft done when I was 20. Honestly, the surgery itself wasn't bad and the pain afterward was manageable with Advil. My periodontist gave me the option of being put under or having a local, so due to your previous experiences you could definitely discuss your options. Hopefully you can find someone through the dental school to do it less expensively, or will give you a payment plan option.

As far as the upper teeth, mine buck out again and have a gap just like they did before braces. I plan to see if I'm a candidate for Invisalign after the wedding; I don't want or need a full correction but the gap bugs me. And now I feel the need to rant about the stupidity of braces; what the point of 3 years in braces (plus a hertz sp? appliance) if my teeth are the same way they were before?
