Hey Knottie Veterans.........Name Change??

Anyone know the process, (who do you go to first, then who, etc.?) or a good website for name change, applicable to WI and then for SS card, passport, and all the other goodies, doctors, insurance, loans, banks, etc.?

Thanks!

You will have to wait until you receive your marriage license.  Once you get that, go to the SS office and get a new SS card.  After you get your SS card, be sure to get  a new DL/State ID.  Then, from there you will be able to change your name with all other accounts.

I did it in this order:
    1.  Wait for marriage certificate
    2. go to social security office
    3. DMV
    4. All other banks, employers, etc.

The process varied depending on the place.  For example, my mortgage required faxing a copy of the marriage certificate, but my regular bank said the new driver's license was sufficient.

I got the name change kit from theKnot. It's pretty helpful, but I plan on doing things in the order the other girls mentioned.

Yes, once you get your marriage license (either in the mail or pick up) then take that with your current SS card and your current DL to the SSA office and change your name with them.  They enter all your information in and hand you a letter stating that you have applied for a new SS card because of a name change due to marriage.

Now this next part varies by DMV.  The same day I got our marriage license and the letter from the SSA, I went straight to the DMV and got my new license.  Some DMV locations make you wait until you physically get your new SS card in the mail.

Then you can change your name everywhere else you have accounts, etc.  It varies with each place so check with each individually for what they will need.

Passport: if yours is less than 1 year, make sure you hit up the post office asap to get your replacement (I believe these are still free).  If they are older than 1 year, then it doesn't matter as you will haveto pay the renewal fees.

I have a question about the name change process....

After the wedding, typically do officiants submit the marriage license or do you have to submit it back to the courthouse, and then after that, how long does it take to get a copy of the marriage license?

It's the officiant's responsibility to file it with the appropriate court house. I got married in a different county than I live in so our Pastor took it to that courthouse. I was married on Saturday and picked up our certified copies yesterday.
