MUA being difficult 2 weeks before wedding!

Hey everyone, I wanted to ask you wonderful ladies if I am just letting the excitment get to me, or if I should be concerned.

Back in February of 2014 I searched around and found a hair/make-up artist that could come to our wedding venue and do mine and my moms hair the morning of the wedding.  She came with many great reviews and her prices seemed to be very reasonable.  (Not super cheap but not crazy expensive).  I contacted her for a quote and we both agreed to move forward.  She was very quick to respond to any questions I had via email or even text message.

Fast forward to July when I contacted her via email to set up a trial date for hair/make-up.  I sent her a message the beginning of the month and no reply.  So I sent her a second message a few days later thinking maybe it didn't go through.  She responded with the dates she had open.  In the meantime my final payment was due, so I paid the remaining balance and contacted her again to let her know it was paid and told her which date would work for me.  The date we had set was sometime this Sunday.

After a few more days, I noticed she didn't get back to me with a time.  So I contacted her again (3rd email) to confirm that she was still available.  Nothing.  So I call her and leave a voice mail.  Nothing for two more days.  So I figure, let me try texting again.  I sent her a text saying I was just following up with my last email/voice message to see when she wanted to meet for a trial.  She responds with "Hey".  Now I'm strating to get a little upset, but I respond back again asking her about the trial appointment.  She claims to not be home, but will let me know shortly...that was two and half days ago.

So my question is, am I being crazy or is she being very unprofessional?  Also she is already paid in full, (my credit card statement tells me so) and I am under contract but I am starting to get worried that she may not deliver her promise!  What should I do to get my appointments honored??? I don't want to be too pushy but I want answers!

Thanks in advance!

  • Does this person work in a hair salon?  If so go directly to her place of business and talk to the owner/manager.

Yes, she is acting unprofessional.  I am still rolling my eyes at her response after you asked her 3 different ways what time on Sunday.  All she thinks to send is a "hey"?  FFS.

  • Oh apparently someone else had the same experience with her recently...looks like I should book a back-up plan now...good grief.
  • Any language in your contract where you can cancel it and get your money back? I agree she is being fishy and not very reliable. You are 2 weeks out. If there is language in the contract to back out, I would write her an email: "Dear MUA, Recently you have become very hard to get in touch with and respond to my communications. I have no choice but to cancel our contract. Due to provisions x, y, and z in the contract, I am entitled to my full amount refunded. Please send the money by A date." You will at least have your cc to dispute the claim if she refuses initially. I understand that this may be a busy time for any wedding vendor, so on the weekends I can understand if she can't return an email or call right away. But there should be no excuse to not return calls during the week. Sorry, TK ate my paragraphs.
  • I definitely wouldn't trust her to show up the day of. Sorry you're dealing with this. I hope you have a clear contract where you can get your money back.
  • Thankfully there is a salon nearby that is willing to squeeze my mom and i in if we need to find an alternate the day of.  The woman there was fantastic and if I can get my money back i would rather just go there and know I will get what I need.  I have to see what the contract says exactly, as I am not sure I can back out without penalties/losing all my money :/
  • She definitely doesn't sound trustworthy at all. I'd be freaking out a little too.

Glad you could find a backup if needed. Of course if she doesn't show up you're entitled to all of your money back, just try to double check the contract to see if there's anything you can do in the next 2 weeks to cancel her and book with the new salon.
  • Why did you even give her ANY money before you did a trial??  Let alone final payment?

I did my trial first, then booked my MUA.  Good thing, because I HATED the first one and had to find someone new.  Not something I would want to be doing just a couple weeks before my wedding!
  • I'd file with your credit card and find a way to get your $ back. Agree with Maggie - is she with a salon?

Yikes! I wouldn't have given her any money until the job was done. Definitely unprofessional.
  • Yes I also think it is suspiscious that she wanted ALL of the money before even doing the job.  Good luck!

In hindsite you are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT.  I shouldn't have agreed to give the final payment without a trial.

The contract allowed me to back-out fully up to 30 days before the event, but that deadline came in went while we were in discussion of the trial date.  I really don't have anyone to blame but myself, now I am just hoping that she either provides the services promised over the next two weeks, or agrees to break contract and provide a refund.

LURKERS:  This is why contract language is soooo important.  I thought I was doing great until this all came up!!

  • Ugh, hoping for the best!
