David's Bridal Alterations

Hi Ladies,

I just spent $200 on alterations (and to steam my slip) and am heartbroken over the first run.

First, as I put on my dress I notices lots of little threads sticking out.  As I looked closer, I noticed some of them were just thread, not attached.  I pulled one and noticed it was attached and some beads fell into my hand.

Then, the alterations assistant helped me get into the dress and do up the back.  The alterations manager did the pinning originally said that to hem the dress with the skirt detail it would be best to pull more fabric into the pick ups rather than cut the hem.  The dress has wavy pick ups in the front.  While viewing the results I noticed that the pick ups were all wrong.  Some were sewn under and some above.  There were like 5-6 detail points on one side and 3 on the other.  This dress is more whimsical and isn't meant to be identical on each side but this was nuts.

After talking with the alterations assistant she began re-pinning the dress and taking out the work that was done.  She talked to the person who sewed the dress who told her the way she was pinning it was wrong.  To do the pickups she needed to pin under them because they sew in the direction of the pins.  The "Alterations Manager" who pinned my dress pinned it WRONG.  How is that possible?

Anyway, this kind alterations assistant was fixing it when I noticed one side of the dress looked like a wadded up Kleenex (near the bottom)...she said it was due to the pleat in the bustle.  She brought out the alterations manager (the women who messed mine up to begin with) who tried to fix it.  I was getting more frustrated and wanted the original person back when the manager told me she had left for the day.  I really felt heartbroken with the experience itself.

So...she finished pinning the dress and I left and then really began to stress about it.  I called the store a couple hours later and talked to a Customer Service Manager and will be going in again to re-look at everything before they take another try.

I guess the reason for the my post is to see if anyone else has had severe issues with David's Bridal in the area and what advice you may have.  I have another place (I should have gotten it altered there) in case I need to go somewhere else.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Which DB was this?  I am not surprised.  I have heard horror storries of DB (ESPECIALLY) with alterations.  I had issues with them but it was more because they had their heads up their assses about if my BM dresses were going to discontinue.  In the end, they screwed up your dress, it is their responsibility to get your dress to you by your wedding day, whether it be refunding your money and giving you one off the rack that you get altered elsewhere, or they actually get it fixed themselves, and properly.

I have heard lots of bad things about DB alterations. I would (am) still considering buying a dress there, but will not be getting alterations done there. I am very sorry to hear about this, hope it works out!

    Exactly this....

You had a BM dress discontinue issue too....I don't feel so bad now - but it sucks that they give little or no warning on it.

The David's Bridal in Greenfield. The Alterations Manager messed it up...well communication between the manager and people who actually sew it is messed up.  Am going in today with my future Mother in Law (who sews a little) to see if we can get it fixed or find alternative ideas.  I may end up taking it elsewhere to be fixed but I will have to demand a good portion of my alteration costs back to do so.  I am on a really tight budget.

    Thanks ladies.

I went back today with my future mother in law and she helped figure out how to fix it.  Not exactly her job but it's on it's way to being better.  Hopefully everything turns out.

    Melissa,
Sorry to hear about your experience. Hopefully, it'll turn around. I didn't like "the vibe" I got from the lady who stopped me 5 feet after entering the store with a "Um, can I help you? You don't have an appointment, do you?"

No, I didn't return there or at any other DB. If you need a recommendation for back up, Carol @ Fig Leaves in Kansasville has gotten a lot of good reviews here on TK.
    Sincerely,
    Kato

My girls went to the DB in Greenfield and they messed up one of their dresses too.  My bm went in with her dress to have the neck and chest done.  The alterations lady said she should do the sides but my bm disagreed and said no.  When she picked up the dress they did the sides and neck but no chest.  They charged her sides and neck.  She picked up in a hurry, didnt try on and had to take it back to have the chest done like she asked.  When I went to talk to the manager they directed me to corporate and the lady I spoke with was a total......yeah.  Very rude, refusing to do anything, defending what they did.  They were wrong and I was mad.  This bm is in 5 more weddings within a year! (yikes for her) So will buy whatever dress the brides pick but will not be getting alterations do at DB.

I just went back to DB after my first fitting to try on the dress. It's a huge ball gown and it needed to be very tight on my waist and hips to keep it up, so that's where they pinned it to take it in. The chest fit fine, maybe even a little big as I have no boobs! When I went back today the hips fit good but the chest was so tight I couldn't even get it on! It was about 4 inches too small. I was told I must have gained weight. I am 5' 10" and 120 lbs. I haven't gained weight in 5 years, especially in my chest. I had to argue with them to fix it since they are the ones that took it in too much. They were very rude and now I have one more fitting because the hips were just a little big, hopefully it actually fits this time as my wedding is in 2 weeks. I would never recommend them to anyone.
