Call-in Guilt

Uh I have a love-hate relationship with calling in to work. I have crap tons of PTO and decided to call in for the weekend because a. I actually still feel pretty awful from the bachelorette party some of my girlfriends threw me on Thurs. b. I really need to get some last min details figured out! (How on earth did we get to be 2 weeks out... I swear I blacked out for a month or two!) and c. I was totally due for a call in and supposedly we get a "free" call in before Sept 1 because the people who make policies are ass backward and don't know what they're doing. Anyone else ever call in and then immediately feel guilty the whole time??

    What is a call in?

ETA - Does this mean you call and say you're sick?
  • Yeah, there have been times where I'm like "I'm not that sick, I could have made it". Of course there have also been times where I was sitting at work going "why the hell didn't I call off". I have also been kicked out of work for being sick before. Which is kind of good because when you do call off no one questions it, they figure you must in bad shape.

  • You earned the PTO. Stop feeling guilty, get your shit done and get a maragrita ;)
  • @JoanE2012 essentially, yes. Except I work in a hospital in an hourly role so we dont have sick days vs personal days vs vacation days... it's all one pot. So we SHOULD plan them in advance but we can "call in" 6 times per year... And thanks @rebeccaflower. I think I will!!
  • I had a sinus infection a few months ago right before a major client deadline. That is the only time I felt guilty about it. Luckily everyone on our team (and the client) understood.
  • Yep, this is totally me. I get migraines often and I'll most days try to go to work but, sometimes  I can't drag myself out of bed without feeling like puking my guts out. However after taking meds and laying on the couch for a few hours I can usually nip them in the bud and by then I'll usually have call in guilt so I'll have the urge to call my boss to tell him I can work from home!

You have your PTO though so try to relax away from work :)

  • My work makes it almost impossible to call in.  If you do, you're given the third degree when you get back, and the guilt trip about how you inconvenienced everyone and made your coworkers pick up your slack. It's intended to keep people from calling in, even if we need to. If you're truly sick, you can't come back without a doctor's note. If your kid is sick, you have to have a note from the kid's doctor. That just leads people to not call in when they should, and we end up passing every sickness around. It's bullshit. My boss once told us we needed to plan ahead for when we get sick so we can ask off ahead of time. WTF?
  • I work from home. I never really felt bad about calling in until I started this project. I don't have to get dressed, I don't even have to get out of bed! I do, however, need to be able to think. Also stay awake. I get the side eye from people when I do it, but I have done it. Both sick and not sick. Not often tho because I feel awful every time.

  • I did for 13 years of my career. But I realized the last couple years that I was putting my career first over too many things, and now I don't feel the least bit guilty.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

This was exactly how it was with the job I just left. Seriously I lost 17 days of choice time one year. If choose to use your choice time you are a horrible person. Fuck that place.

Don't feel bad. Enjoy your weekend!
  • I don't because I know I work hard and feel everyone deserves a break once in a while. :)  But I am sure I will call in less than most people. I tend to work longer hours than my co-workers.
