High tech advice wanted

Today DH hung his huge, curved screen ultra-high def TV on the family room wall.  It is connected to our cable.  DH is a retired electronic engineer, and is very, very happy.
You younger folks know more about technology than I do.  I know I want streaming Netflix.  What other apps?  What is Hulu?  Educate me, please!

  • Hulu stays up with current shows. Usually to stream it you have to have Hulu Plus which costs money. Though if you just hook an HDMI into a laptop you can use hulu which is free. I think to play on anything outside of a computer they charge.

If you already have amazon prime (for ordering) they have apps on most gaming systems and some blueray/dvd systems and you can watch a lot of old seasons (similar to netflix). I don't have netflix, just amazon prime. They also have music now, which is pretty cool.

I've been living with just my blueray and wii (use for amazon prime). I then use either Hulu or my parents xfinity account to stay caught up with the very few current shows I watch.

  • Hulu is another way to watch tv shows and they show up on hulu shortly after they air (like the next day) whereas with netflix you have to wait for the entire season to be released.

I like Pandora.  Streaming music.  You can name your own stations and it selects songs that fit that theme.  Like I have a toddler station, Disney, Kenny Chesney, Faith Hill, Smash (the tv show, they play a lot of Broadway stuff, not just the show's soundtrack), Bon Jovi, among others.

  • If you have HBO, HBOtoGo! Its a great app for watching shows when you want! But you have to be subcribed to HBO on the first place.

We just canceled our Netflix in favor of Amazon Prime. I will always have Prime anyway for the 2-day shipping (I buy A LOT off Amazon), and Netflix has been getting throttled really badly with slow speeds in our area. I like that Prime has some selections for free (like all of 24 and The Sopranos, which Netflix doesn't have) and you can buy/rent additional titles (like I rented Bridesmaids the other night for $3 without having to drive to the Redbox).

  • Amazon Prime is MY JAM. I use it on my computer when I want to watch movies before bed, my Smart TV in my little office room, and on my DVD player in the living room.

And I also use it to buy shit and get free 2-day shipping ALL THE TIME.
