Packing for that "nectarmoon"- help!

I think I'm overpacking. Granted, we will be backpacking for four-five days so we are taking a LOT OF STUFF. Between us we are taking my iPhone, my pocket canon camera, and my dslr Nikon. Now, we are going to alaska. I can see a use for each and every one of these things... Especially the nice camera (I feel like I am going to be kicking myself every second I can't use it). But it takes up SO MUCH SPACE and I haven't gotten it out for any other purpose in over 12 months. Should I be bringing this stupid thing? Or should I leave it and trust the iPhone and canon that have gotten me amazing pictures on every trip I've taken them?

  • If you're getting pictures you're happy with from the smaller camera and the phone, then save yourself the space and hassle, and ditch the DSLR.  Personally, I lug mine around with me everywhere I go.  I didn't even bother replacing my pocket camera when it broke.  Are you going to want any of the features of the DSLR that the other cameras don't have?  I love being able to play with the zoom a bit more than I could with pocket and phone.  But, it's down to what makes you comfortable.

It may also be a question of battery life.  Do you think you'll run through the battery on the phone and the pocket camera in one day, and still have more pics to take?  If not, then again, leave the DSLR at home.

  • The zoom, especially for wildlife and the hope of a clear view of mt McKinley is basically the most important thing for me.
  • I've been to Alaska a couple of times, and I wish I'd had a better camera. You probably won't get close enough to most of the wildlife to get a good picture without zoom, and the landscapes are well worth the weight of the good camera. Leave the pocket cam behind!

  • Bring it! FI was in Alaska and he brought his DSLR. He got amazing pictures. He was so happy he brought that camera with him.
  • Bring the good camera.

  • We brought it. FI is complaining he looks like Dora the Explorer carrying it but it's with us! Also our checked bag of gear was 49lbs. FTW.
