PNR WR AW: My dress with belt, cake blues

Sorry about PNR work has been crazy but I wanted to share what happened this weekend!

Saturday morning, FI, MOH and I went to the baker for cake tasting and to pick out a design. The cake was DELICIOUS but the woman who owned the place was rude. The baker is in contract with the venue so I think that's why I felt so rushed. I cried after we left the bakery I was so upset. She made me feel like I was an idiot and that she was too busy to even deal with me. It was like "did you pick a flavor yet?" Um, no. "How many people are invited?" I tell her 64 and she goes "well surely, not everyone is going to RSVP so I'll estimate 50". That annoyed the piss out of me. We're having a small enough wedding that pretty much everyone is (hopefully) going to RSVP and we've been budgeting for 100% attendance so make your cake with 100% attendance in mind too. She kept going into the back to check on her intern and she kept saying "I'm very busy, I have seven weddings today". Okay, great, thanks.

I've worked in customer service my whole adult career. Dealing with people is tough. There are just some people who are talented at what they do but shouldn't deal with people. I think this woman is one of those people. Her work is amazing, her cakes were better than the popular bakery a few towns over and you could tell she loves what she does, she doesn't like dealing with people and their nuances. I mean, FFS she had us rushed out of there so fast we couldn't even ask about doing favors through her. Oh well, that's her problem.

I emailed our venue coordinator and let her know what happened and that they should keep it in mind when they re-negotiate their contract/vendor agreement. The venue coordinator emails me back and is shocked to hear what happened because she never got complaints about the baker before. So I'm 100% sure that it was an off day for her. The venue coordinator said she'll let the owner of the bakery know how I felt, so I feel like my cake is going to be all fucked up for the wedding. Great....

ANYWAY when we get back home, MOH suggested that I put on my dress with all of my accessories to cheer me up. And it did!!!! I've tried on the dress before but not with the accessories. The dress I ordered through Etsy that someone on here helped me pick out I was kind of on the fence about, but now with the dress I love it, here are some pictures. I'm frowning the picture because I was HOT. I couldn't imagine wearing a wedding dress in the middle of summer!

what flavors did you end up choosing for your cake?

Thank you! We ended up choosing red velvet cake with a white chocolate filling.

The cake will look something like this: image

but the scrollwork will only be on the top half of each tier and in black. The ribbon will be red and have a border of rhinestones on the top and bottom of the ribbon (if that makes sense?). We're getting a custom cake topper from here: CLICKY

My mom is giving me her cake knife that she used for her wedding, it's engraved with their names and wedding date, so I'll bring it to the jeweler to have it engraved with our names and wedding date to keep the tradition going. I didn't know you were supposed to have a nice cake knife or toasting flutes, I feel like I failed on that part. My one BM showed me toasting flutes that I might like, which they were pretty so if we have the money in the budget we'll order them down the road.

  • I cannot see the image of the cake :(  the cake topper is cute though.  Before the actual wedding planning started, my mom and I joked about for my wedding having like 80 guests but telling the bakers it was going to be 250 guests just to make sure we had a ton of left overs.

Your dress looks great with that belt!!

  • I'm sorry the cake experience was the greatest, but your cake looks pretty and sounds real good.

Your dress with the belt looks perfect!!!

  • I'm sorry you had an icky experience with the baker. Your dress looks amazing with all the accessories!!! SO PRETTY!

    Red Velvet and white chocolate...NOMS!!!!!
  • Your dress looks awesome with all the accessories! I'm sorry you had a lousy experience with the baker, though, and I can't see the inspiration picture of your cake.
  • Your dress and accessories are beautiful! I love it! I'm sorry your baker was so rude to you though. I had a similar-ish experience and I went with a different baker because of it...but I also had more than one option with my venue and both cakes I tried were equally amazing so I don't have any regrets. Either way, I want to nom on all of your cake! It sounds delicious!

  • I'm sorry about the baker experience.  Some vendors just assume you should fall all over them.
  • yum!!!  what about the design, @buddysmom80?  did you pick a design or are you going with a simpler style?  I love cake!!
  • Wow, that baker was beyond rude. Why did she schedule your cake tasting that day if she was so busy? At least the cake was yummy though. I'm sure your cake will be fabulous. The pic you posted isn't showing up though :(

  • that is a beautiful design!!
  • I'm glad you said something to the venue about the baker. One of the pieces of advice I got from my future sister-in-law when we were still searching for vendors was that we should talk to our coordinator before going with any of the preferred vendors. The reason why was that at her wedding, they hired a JOP who was a preferred vendor, and he was incredibly difficult to work with. He was condescending, he made them feel unimportant, and at the rehearsal, he threatened to start without several people in attendance--including the groom!--because they were three minutes late. He did a fine job as an officiate during the wedding ceremony, but my future brother- and sister-in-law both regret choosing him. When they mentioned that to their venue later, they found out that numerous couples had complained about the same JOP and that the coordinators for the venue were trying to take him off the list.

I mean, it sounds like maybe it WAS an off day for her, but ... as someone who's ALSO worked with customers, I know you don't get to have an off day. Do you have to get a cake through this bakery?

Either way, know that you look fuckin' AMAZING in your wedding gear.

  • Thanks everyone for the support, I felt like such a bridezilla when I let the venue coordinator know what happened, but I think a 20 minute cake testing, design, GTKY session is a little short.

@phira our cake is included with the price of the venue so this was the only baker we could work with. SHE HAD SPICE CAKE TOO (which she told we couldn't have to try because it's a "fall flavor only")

FI agrees with you on that. He's like "I don't like any of these flavors except for spice cake" she's like "too bad"

    Besides, you guys are all

So why can't she just make an exception? It's not like the ingredients for spice cake ONLY EXIST between the months of September and December or something.

  • So sorry to hear about the rude baker, but you look fantastic in your dress!

  • @phira @buddysmom80 OH GOD the baker has released the spice cake evils!  What a jerk.  At least her cake is good.  I want cake now.

The good thing about working retail (and therefore being on my feet and typically moving/lifting heavy crap for 6-9 hours a day?) is that I don't even have to have an excuse for eating cake/chocolate/dessert.  I work off far too many calories every day.  I come home and carboload on the regular.  The bad thing?  I'm buying a house and really want to spend my calories playing with my new house!!  Needless to say, I applied for 3 jobs in the last 1.5 hours :)

AND DUH BUDDYSMOM80 IS THE HOTTEST!!  I can't believe you survived the baker without slapping her though :)
I guess, to tell you the truth, I've never had much of a desire to grow facial hair. I think I've managed to play quarterback just fine without a mustache. - Peyton
  • @Buddysmom80 I must say, you deserve an award for not punching the throat of the baker. Seriously, just because weddings are her everyday business doesn't mean you should be punished for that.   I would pay her in a sack of pennies when the final payment is due!

Meanwhile, your dress is AHHH-mazing!!  I love the belt, and I love your face.  I actually thought you were making the face because of the baker experience, which would not have been surprising ;)  but the heat works too

  • @BreMR - Sack of pennies?!? You evil genius!
