Re: Wedding Websites

  • Thanks for this thread, @JCBride2015! I have been lurking it hard because although I would happily throw something up on The Knot and deal with it, FI has already said he wants a "nice" site that doesn't look cookie-cutter.

So, thanks for basically having your shit more together than I do and basically planning my wedding.
Ha, my pleasure @KatieinBkln.  From now until October 1 is hardcore planning time for me before I start my job.  Lurk away!

ETA: next up is STDs and the photo shoot for those (I can't really call it an engagement shoot after 1.5 years, but ya know.  Picturez because why not.)
Well, I know what I'll be doing till October 1...

  • @steph11814 I can't double check since my work computer blocks that (tho weirdly, doesn't block tk!) but that sounds right to me.

Sure you can. You're still engaged, aren't you?

Truth.  We never had photos done when we first got engaged, principally because we were mucking out our apartment and then moving.

    "We're still engaged" photos?

I figure maternity pics aren't taken as soon as you get pregnant, just WHILE you're pregnant, so who says engagement pics have to be taken as soon as you get engaged?

  • One vote here for AppyCouple.  We're using it for our wedding website and have been really pleased with it so far.  I felt like the $35 fee was reasonable, there are lots of cool designs (although I'm still not entirely sure which one we're going to go with--apparently 'industrial chic' isn't exactly a popular theme for a wedding.)  We also really liked the integrated app functionality and the fact that guests could take pictures and upload them right to the page.  One thing I will say is that there's not a lot of room for customization in terms of layout, but if you're just looking for a place to put the basic date/time/location/travel info/registry info up (which IMO is all you need anyway) then I say go for it.
  • Also I vote for theme #3 that you linked.  So adorable!
  • I'm using Weebly. It's pretty good. It's not specifically for weddings but it's very customizable and if you know html, you can mess with their templates and make your own (I don't but FI has. I didn't like what he did to it so I went back to the template), plus it's free though you can upgrade and pay for extra features.

  • I did nearlyweds.com it has weddingpaper diva designs which I liked, and it was easy to get rid of a bunch of the pages

I really wanted to like Weebly because their mobile designs are so nice.  I just can't seem to find a template on there I like, and it looks like a lot of the background photos can't be changed easily.  I like the idea of the static, blurred-out background photo with scrolling content on top-- KWIM?

  • I used mywedding and I loved it, lots of nicer designs to choose from vs TK and a lot of ability to add additional or hide unnecessary pages. The RSVP system worked well too :) and it was free.

  • I've spent half the day clicking around and I still like Appy Couple's designs way better.  But now there are too many that I like.  I'm going to show Fi some tonight and see if he likes it, too.

Also tech-related: a couple months ago I was playing around with my married FirstLast@gmail.com and deleted it because I didn't want Fi to see that I had it.  Now come to find out that once you delete a Gmail account, that username is kaput forever!  You can't ever register it again!  WTF?  Why would they want to perpetually tie up deleted email addresses?

I just got FirstMLast@gmail.com just to have something to sit on but it really annoys me.  I called their customer service and everything, no luck.  >:|

ETA: Fi just asked me if he should use Bing instead of Google "because we are mad at them."  Aw.

And here are a few of the templates I like @sugargirl1019 and anybody else who cares:
Idk anything about your wedding, but I like #1 and #4. I I love the layout with the 4 pictures going across! See what FI likes!

  • I got a nice--and free!--fall design from wedding wire. And we could password protect it.
  • I just used TK and whatever service they linked to for the $20 custom domain name. Wasn't worth it to me to do more research on it, and I really like the design.
    Ditto.
I did a little more research, because some friends used Appy couple, and my sister used something else, I forget now. I liked the knot's design the best, and since I was already here, it made it easy.

  • I used TK. We got to make our domain slightly, it ended up being janeandjohn.our wedding.com *** **Names changed. Jane and john were actually our last names. It was an easy to remember website name, and the layout worked just fine for me. Now, I've seen some immaculate crazy involved websites and I'm like how did you get it to so that?? They must know how to build websites, or paid lots to do the website, because it had scrolling pictures and music and looked like a professional photographers website.
Oh God I hate background music on websites.  Noooo!

That said, I actually used to build websites in college as my PT job.  So I'm extremely picky about websites and I really want ours to look professional.

ETA: but my coding skills have not kept up with recent web developments, nor do I have the energy to reteach myself, so a WYSIWYG editor with a nice, pre-made theme is still what I want to do.  I'm just pickier than the average bird about it.
This is where I was — I've done web design in the past and wanted full control over how things looked, but needed a good template to start with. I hated a lot of the standard "wedding website" templates and was annoyed to not have much control over the design.

So I went with weebly.com. I liked their templates (which are fully customizable) and they have a drag-and-drop editor that is pretty easy to use. We got a custom domain name for $39.95 (optional), but otherwise it's free.

Good luck with whatever you decide!
  • I'm using TK.  People seem be navigating it just fine and I put it together in about an hour.  I just wanted a place to list registry and hotel info mostly, so my needs were pretty basic.

I did the same thing but am irritated by a few things:

    1. limitations on page design. Basically, no HTML allowed. It works for most things but it's limited.
    2. Miserable tracking capabilities. I'm not a web genius by any stretch of the imagination but I was super-annoyed when I found it that TK doesn't allow Google Analytics.
Hahaha I do web analytics for a living. The last thing I wanted to do was analytics on my wedding website. :)
It's been an aspect of most of my jobs over the years. If it played a bigger role, I'd probably lose interest too!

  • I used TK as well. I'm not super tech savvy so I liked that it was mostly fill in the blanks. I was super busy around the time invites went out with the website details, so I didn't even look around to see what I could find on other sites.
