Would I need a bustle?

My dress fits perfect on the top but is a little long at the bottom and my cousin and mom only think that the first bottom layer would need the be hemmed as I plan to wear flats otherwise we are good to go on alterations.

The only thing is I'm unsure if I could get away with not doing a bustle or not or something simple. I don't want to do anything major to the dress and ruin why I fell in love with it in the store from the beginning.

Sorry for the sideways photos they are vertical in my album.

  • Unless you want to hold your train the entire wedding reception you will need to have a bustle added. It doesn't change the look of the dress at all until you bustle it. A good seamstress will make it look likes it was suppose to be bustled the whole time once it's up!

  • Maybe this thread will be helpful. It's pretty much someone asking exactly the same question and their 35 comments: http://forums.theknot.com/discussion/1032585/do-you-think-a-bustle-is-necessary#latest

  • Yes, you'll need a bustle unless you want people stepping all over your dress all night.

  • Get a french bustle.  I had a ruffled skirt on my dress, and I did that so it wouldn't change the appearance.  It tucks under instead of coming up and making something visible from the back.  It looked just like my dress.  I almost left it bustled for the ceremony because it turned it into a gown without a train.  But my MOH convinced me to let the train down just for the ceremony.  I liked the gown bustled more!
  • I have no clue but just wanted to say your dress is beautiful! :)

Do you have a photo of your bustle done up and not done?

  • You definitely want a bustle.  Especially if you plan on dancing.  I was at a wedding where the bride had a very short train and they didn't bother to bustle before entering the reception.  The went immediately into the first dance after the entrance and every time they turned the train got more and more twisted around their feet and her husband stepped on it multiple times.

  • i had a similar dress a mori lee julietta 3098 this is me with my dress bustled  but as you can see in the photo the bustle broke on me we had a one point bustle added but me not thinking i should have asked for a three point. we had to rig the bustle loop and tie it to the bottom of my corset laces and tuck inside my dress

  • Another vote to bustle. There are many styles of bustles, you just have to have your seamtress show you a few different styles & decide on the one you like best.

This exaclty.  Try different kinds of bustles!
  • Bustle.  You'll be so glad you did!!

I spent some time online hunting up my specific dress and getting bustle ideas so that I could take those ideas to my seamstress and discuss them (I wanted to make sure to really feature the color aspect of my gown, and not conceal some of the neat details on the train).  The way she ultimately DID the bustle made me happy, although the execution of the bustle SUCKED (totally my seamstress' fault).

Because my bustle basically gave out on the day of the wedding, I ended up having to drag my train around with the finger loop, which was a pain because it limited my freedom, and I was stressed just sitting down that I'd slide my chair over my train, or someone would step on it, or it would get SUPER filthy.
