Wedding coordinator/liability insurance

I've been interviewing wedding coordinators and found one I really like. The only thing is, she requires that I add her to my liability insurance plan that we purchase for the wedding (required by our venue). Is this normal?? She doesn't hold liability insurance for her wedding planning business. Is this a red flag/problem, or is it OK? Have any of you come across this before?

Re: Wedding coordinator/liability insurance

  • I have no personal experience with this, but it seems weird to me.  Businesses should carry their own insurance.  She'll have no idea what kind of insurance you get her and that could really bite her (and maybe you) in the ass down the road.

  • This doesn't seem right to me. I'm no insurance adjuster, but it seems like if she wants the benefits of insurance, she should be paying for it herself rather than requesting that all of her clients add her to their policies. Most couples don't even buy wedding insurance. What does she do then? Ask them to purchase a policy for her benefit?

  • Yeah, it seems odd to me that someone who owns their own business doesn't carry liability insurance.  Even if she is the sole employee I feel like she should have insurance.

  • TIL wedding insurance is a thing

  • It's not unusual for vendors asked to be covered on your liability insurance (not just for weddings)  I can't say I've heard of a wedding coordinator asking.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

I've only heard of venues being asked to be riders on an insurance policy (for clients and vendors) not vendors asking clients. And those venues carry insurance, they just want the vendors hit first if the vendor creates a problem on property (The venue is almost always involved in the lawsuit) I think it's strange regarding the coordinator. I would not hire a vendor that did not carry their own insurance.
