Do I really need a makeup trial?

The salon where I plan on having my makeup done charges the full price for a makeup trial ($65). I've had my makeup done there once about a month ago as a BM and I loved it. Other than making it a little more dramatic and adding some false eyelashes, I plan on going for the same look (I have photos).

As long as I request the same makeup artist and bring a picture of my makeup from before, do you think I really need a trial? We're on a tight budget and I'm pretty frugal, so I'd like to skip it but I feel unsure.

  • I would normally always recommend doing a trial, but seeing as you know the make-up artist's style, you may be able to skip it. Anyway you would be able to just let her know what you are wanting before she comes the morning of so that you are on the same page?

  • I think if you've used this MUA before, you shouldn't need a trial.
  • I wouldn't bother if you're familiar with them.  If I were you, I'd feel confident skipping it.

Full price for a trial?  Really?? ew.

  • Yea if you just had it done that recently where the artist is the same, I wouldn't bother. I'm not having one, but my bridesmaid is doing it for free and she's done it on me in the past when we were both bridesmaids for someone else.

  • I agree with PPs.

I came into this thread with a "ZOMG DO ITTTT!!" attitude but if you've already have your makeup done by this MUA and it was good, you should be fine.

I got an airbrush trial and it was HORRIBLE. SO thick. I'm so glad I spent the money to do it beforehand.

I had the same experience with my trial. The airbrush was a little too heavy - though the MUA said she could def. go a bit lighter on it on my day since I really will need the long-lasting effects because (due to the salons hours) our appt is quite a bit before the wedding itself. She also did the eye makeup super heavier than i liked so we agreed on lightening that too.

  • As a MUA myself, I find it weird that yours charges full price for a trial...that seems a bit off. On the other hand, if you have already had your makeup done by the same MUA then there's no real need to have a trial. As long as you're comfortable with them and feel happy with your choice from the first time!

  • I live across the country from where I had my wedding. I didn't really have the option to do a trial for hair or makeup. I booked a MUA on the recommendation of some friends, did some emailing back and forth with pictures of what I liked, info about my "problem areas" (stupid under eye circles) and had no issues the day of. I don't think a trial is necessary at all, especially if you've used the MUA before.
