Feminist rant

Yesterday, I cleaned out my kitchen cabinets.  I have a drawer for sticky labels, cards and pens.  I organized all the free sticky labels into three stacks - his name, my name, our names together.
Our joint bank account has both our names on it.  When we write a check to a charity, it is from both of us.
Why do these same charities send us all the free sticky labels with only his name on it?  I usually write those checks.  There are only two charities that have ever sent the sticky labels with my name on them.  (Yay, Easter seals!)
The only ones with both our names on it are ones I ordered for my own use.  (Christmas cards)  I do not object to Mrs. & Mrs. John Doe - at least that acknowledges that I exist!
This is ridiculous in this day and age.  Guess who will get my future contributions?

"I'm not a rude bitch.  I'm ten rude bitches in a large coat."

  • I never even thought of that, but, yeah I haven't gotten any free address labels since I got married. And I used to get them from random groups, not places I had donated money to.

  • Is your husband's name first on the check?

It might have nothing to do with you being a woman, but his name is first, so they put him alone thinking he is the primary account holder.

My name was first on our mortgage, so there is some paperwork that only was addressed to me.

    Still annoying though!

  • My husband got the trash bill in his name alone. I found it pretty funny. He said: 'why is this just addressed to me?' I said he was the man so they assumed he was responsible for the trash (he is!).

  • I assume the labels are generated by a computer program that just takes the first and last name they have. I doubt there is room for both names in the database, so they default to your husband's name.

Honestly, I'd just ditch the labels and get on with my life.

Ditto. I bought the house we live in 8 years ago (DH and I have been married almost 2). The property tax and anything else house related comes in my name. He doesn't feel emasculated by it.
  • My mom won't give money to organizations that send things just to my dad or that assume she uses his last name (she never changed her name). I don't blame her.

We went to buy wedding bands and the jeweler kept talking past me at my now husband. He doesn't even have a checkbook, I'm the one writing the check here, I'm the one picking out my wedding band, please don't pretend I don't exist.

But like someone else mentioned, my name is first on our mortgage, so I get most of the mail when places look up homeowners and mail them crap.

  • I took my dad with me when I bought my first car. I was 30 and mostly just needed a ride to dealerships. He had to tell people repeatedly that I was making the decision.

I nearly bought a Nissan but was so offended by the dealer that I vowed never to go back.
