Signature drinks?

I keep being asked about signature drinks for our wedding. I need help. FI and I have very different tastes so we'll need different drinks:

FI's family: very sweet and fruity. Nothing herb-y (i.e. FI and his brothers hate mint). When they drink, it's usually wine coolers or Malibu and pineapple juice, but people are pretty flexible. Tequila and rum are favorites.

My family: mostly wine but my cousins are all into artisan cocktails. For examples, the signature drink at my uncles' wedding yesterday was a hibiscus flower soaked in hibiscus syrup, topped with champagne and a twist of lime. My aunt served lavender martinis at her last party.

We'll have an open bar with wine, beer, booze, soda, etc. but it's not super-high-end and doesn't have the broadest selection. We can bring in other products if we like. They are limited to high ball and wine glasses, so martinis and champagne are not ideal.

I'm thinking something like these:

Me: a personal favorite: gin, lemon juice, and seltzer. Or maybe a lemondrop?

FI: rum punch (something like this). I just worry that the sweet, fruity drinks that we think of are too summary for an October wedding.

What do you think? I want something quick and easy to make or that can be made in pitchers beforehand. I'd also prefer fewer ingredients that I need to buy.

Also, if you have fun name suggestions, I'd love to hear them. We're not having a theme to our wedding but my family was making tons of Lucy and Ricky suggestions yesterday. FI doesn't think his friends/family will catch the joke as quickly so we need other ideas.

  • Would apple or cranberry be fruity enough for them while still being fall-like?? Like an apple sangria, or a cider margarita? Maybe an apple-cranberry white wine punch for your side, so you can use some of the same ingredients? You could infuse it with some fresh ginger to make it fancy.

  • Sweet fruity drinks are fine year round in my opinion. Have you considered a spiked cider?

  • Well,  I would suggest a margarita type drink. MAybe a margarita with a fall kick, like a cinnamon margarita, or a margarita with hot sauce in it (FI makes his "famous mixologist cocktail" which is tequila, lime or lemon juice, hot sauce, and pepper.). Not too sure how your crowd would like a spicy drink, though. I think Rum punch would be fine!  Maybe even some red sangrias or cinnamon sangrias?

  • I am a big fan of Saint Germain and lemonade, but it is pretty summery.

@lolo883 had a good suggestion of things with cranberry. I dug these up from Southern Living:

(Plus a bonus apple pie booze drink!)

  • I'm not a fan of apple-flavored things but FI just fell in love with the idea apple margaritas and cranberry/bourbon combinations.

I'm thinking about ginger with cranberry- my favorite side at Thanksgiving is my mom's cranberry orange relish with ginger. Yum!

I knew TK would be the place for drink ideas!

  • I'm having a really hard time deciding on a signature cocktail. We're 9/27 and during the day, so I think I might just go with a Bellini.
  • I think if it's something special to you guys, it makes the signature drinks that much better! So if FI loves rum punch (or other fruity drinks- go for it!) We did a white wine sangria (summer wedding) so maybe a fall sangria with apples, or cinnamon or apple cider would be nice. Our signature drinks were just called "Mr" and "Mrs." Nothing too creative, unfortunately.

  • We are having an October wedding and are considering choosing from the following, if it helps:

Cranberry margarita, apple pie on the rocks cocktail, cranberry kiss, pomegranate martini, pumpkin martini, pear-tini.

  • Oooh those sound good!

So FI informed me last night that he doesn't like sangria, martinis, or margaritas. While I've seen him drink all of those happily, he's made his decision. Ugh.

    A pomegranate martini sounds wonderful...

What the hell?!?! I think he's PMSing. Ask him again next week. ;-)

  • So just my 2 cents. I don't think a drink is necessarily "summery". If I like a drink, I'll drink it year round and I'm not going to think twice about you serving lemonade based drinks in the fall. So I really think the whole drinks have to match a theme is over thinking it.

    Just my thoughts.

  • What if one of them was a warm drink? Hot mulled wine or hot apple/pear cider with orange or lemon slices might be nice. The cider could even start non-alcoholic and have a couple of optional additions if you were able to serve it that way.

I really love this idea. If you start with a mulled cider you can just add a shot of something to it when you serve it to the drinkers, and leave it plain for the kids and the drivers.  It just depends on whether your venue can accommodate this.

Oh, I should be honest and tell you that I'm obsessed with mulled wine and cider.  I'd never found anywhere serving it until I was in Edinburg in 2009 (I guess it doesn't get cold enough in Australia) and now I make it all the time.
