Re: RIP Robin Williams

  • So sad.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • This breaks my heart.
  • Goddamnit. Fuck everything.

  • Terribly sad.  I really hope that there will be some serious consideration given to what help is available for those suffering mental illnesses, and how accessible it is.  Sometimes it does take something like this to start the conversation the minority of us have been having for decades, and for me, across several continents.

It appears there is none to be found...

Oh my God, that's so sad. I always loved him, from back in his Mork and Mindy days.

  • This is so sad. I have always admired him and his work. In fact, we sent out our invites yesterday and there was one for him :( He will be missed.

  • Depression is serious. It doesn't care if you are rich or poor, young or old, famous or not. This made me so, so sad to read. I have so many memories of watching "Mork & Mindy" as a kid. What a creative mind taken from us too soon.

  • So sad. BF and I were at Target Thursday and they had a bunch of $5 dollar movies and we decided to get one that wasn't for the 3 year old for once and got Mrs. Doubtfire. Want to watch it but also think there will definitely be a lot of sadness with the funny. Also this may be an unpopular opinion, not sure, but I'm kind of pissed at the amount of people I've seen saying things online like how it's not sad because it was his own fault, he was selfish and no one should be sad for him etc etc. Death is sad and death we see as preventable even harder to deal with sometimes but I feel like a lot of people don't understand what depression is and how serious it can really be and that it isn't so black and white.

    SITB:

What an awful thing to say about someone with a mental illness. People can be so stupid and uneducated. That makes my blood boil.

  • H and I are just devastated. We adored him. He's our favorite comedian. I desperately wanted to find proof it wasn't true. But perhaps some good can come of this and the discussions about mental illness will be taken beyond a murmur. His poor wife and daughter. My heart breaks for them.

I haven't seen those…….yet.  But then I have a high number of social worker/therapist types as fb friends so I'm seeing articles about the warning signs of depression and suicide prevention being posted.

  • I cannot believe this. This makes me so sad. I grew up with Ribin Williams movies. One of my friends dad always reminded me of Robin Williams and I always told him that all the time. I recently watched the Birdcage, one of my favorite Robert Williams movies. I'm so sad for his family, too. Depression is such a sad tragic illness.

  • FI came outside since I was waiting for him to get off work and told me. It took everything I had to hold it together. @lolo883 ‌ that picture made me break completely.

The worst part is everyone says depression is treatable when its recognized; i dont know how no one ever recognized it. I saw him on inside the actors studio when I was 12 and remember turning to my mom and saying "so safe to say he's as bipolar as I am?".

Because most people just saw a funny guy.  They saw a character, not mood swings.  And even when it's being treated it can take a long time to dig out of that hole.

  • a lot of people hide the fact that they're depressed, and the same with being suicidal. No one knew I was until I attempted suicide, and I am so thankful that I didn't succeed at it. Something else that few people realize, is that those who are suicidal tend not to be rational/make rational decisions. It literally feels like there is no way to get through whatever the problem is, even though it may be obvious to others not in the situation.

I will miss you Robin Williams, you had a tremendous positive impact on many people.
  • This is just so sad. His poor family.

This.  I just watched The Birdcage this weekend.  I'm so shocked and sad.

I thought his struggles with depression and alcoholism were common knowledge. I mean I knew, and I don't follow celebrities at all. Doesn't make it any less sad, but he had gotten help before. Sometimes a person just feels they can't get out.

A thousand times this.  I was teaching a foster parent class one day and was telling the story of one of our kids who was hospitalized for suicidal ideation and how her statements had progressed over a couple of days.  The thing was it wasn't a rational progression and the parents couldn't understand that.  We also ran into potential parents who thought that if the kid was talking about killing themselves they wouldn't do it.
