So I got an email from the head of alumni relations at my Alma Mater. She would like to connect me to a recent grad in my field so he can learn about my career experiences etc. I do a quick facebook search of his name and up pops his public profile complete with a picture of him posing with a giant (10+ ft) snow penis last winter.

Rule #1: don't be stupid.

This is going to be fun...

    What is your field???

ETA: Please tell me it's architecture so I can make inappropriate jokes about erecting snow penises.
Oh, I wish it was! No, I'm a chemist and from what I know the student was a chem/bio major.

Well, I made a joke about erecting penises anyway, for your enjoyment. Maybe it's a sign that he is a huge dick?

Hahahahaha I hope not. We'll just have to wait and see, th5pugh.

  • First advice as a mentor: change your FB pic!
  • First advice as a mentor: change your FB pic!
Second advice as mentor: lock down your social media so random people/potential employers can't see it and then don't post anything you wouldn't want your hypothetical boss to see.

  • Yeah good luck with that! I have a mentor and he is the greatest. He is one of my professors and he already has given me so many expercienes/ jobs I wouldn't have had if I never met him.

  • Yup, this sounds like it's going to be an uphill battle.
  • I've had a few great mentors over the years and have mentored a number of people going through my grad school.

Mentoring only works if the person wants real feedback. If they're just hoping you'll get them a job or make their resumes prettier, it won't work. Real, occasionally tough feedback requires a different kind of person.

My best mentors were the ones that pushed my assumptions and gave me tough love when I needed it. I will only mentor people who respect my time and effort. Basically, I've dropped the folks who argue with me about things like making your FB profile private.

    Good luck!
