Bad Dreams

Anyone else have bad dreams that still feel real when you wake up?

Last night I dreamt that I was fired from my job. It felt so real, I still feel on edge a bit this morning at the office. I know there is absolutely no reason IRL that I should be concerned, but I'm still a bit freaked out. H and I have been paying off debt like crazy, but we probably only have enough to get by for a month (maybe 2) in savings without my job. Yikes!

Do you remember your dreams?

Re: Bad Dreams

  • Oh my gosh. I had THE worst dream like that this spring.

I had a dream that SO's mom called me and told me that he had passed away in an accident. No one knew what happened, but he was gone. I couldn't breathe in my dream. It was horrible. I woke up from it, but when I went back to sleep it started where it left off (Why doesn't that happen for good dreams?). Well, that is what my entire dream was about. He had passed away and I was grieving. When I finally woke up...I still had tears coming down my face and I was shaking. I just had this horrible, horrible feeling all morning. I was telling my roommate about it at breakfast, and she could tell I wasn't being ridiculous. I was legitimately so sad, and I felt so SILLY! Obviously nothing was wrong with SO, but I couldn't get over that feeling all morning.

Scientists say that we dream every night, but we only remember small percentages of our dreams.
  • I dream all the time and remember a lot of them. The bad ones don't always stick with me but one time I had a dream that FI died and I woke up crying from it. It took awhile for the horrible feeling of loss to pass even though I knew it was just a dream.

  • @allusive007 I'm sorry your dream got to you!

I have lots of memorable dreams. Last night I dreamt about @cu97tiger and Mr. Tiger. They had just arrived at my house (which was not actually my house), to stay the night before we leave for vacation. They came in costume though, and I was stressing about having an equally awesome costume to go out in. The time kept passing rapidly as I tried to find/figure out/decide on a costume to wear. I was glad to wake up and realize I did not need a costume for their arrival in 15 days.
  • @Allusive007 I always remember my dreams!! Sometimes I'll wake up and ask H about them because he would be in them and I would say something in my dream to him. He would then look at me like my crazy haha.

I have really bad nightmares when I'm stressed and they are so vivid and real. Last night wasn't a nightmare but it was about Bella, my dog that recently passed, and she was just running around like she was healthy again. I remember all of it. I wish I wrote them down so I could look back and the crazy stuff that I dream about lol.
  • I only remember my bad dreams, too, but they're less realistic. Mostly I dream about whatever I'm reading/watching. The dream that combined The Hunger Games with Harry Potter was freaky as shit, because shit gets real when the Games are held in Hogwarts and everyone has wands.
This is a genius book idea!

@allusive007 - I have lots of dreams and remember most of them. Some of them are horrible, and others are just weird. Last night I had a weird one about a wedding photographer I follow(ed) on social media in my area. For some reason I was with her FI and two kids (whom I've never met) and wound up face to face with her and she was annoyed that I was there. But then I woke up. I haven't been on social media in 15 days. I have no idea where that came from. So weird.

I haven't had any bad dreams lately, but in the past I did have some.  My FI has asked me not to watch Ancient Aliens before bed time because of my dreams.

    Dream 1
I was abducted by aliens.  They were running experiments trying to find cures for common things that human suffer from.  I get cold sores - all the time and they're huge and ugly and hurt like a son-of-a-gun.  So in my dream there was another human who I didn't recognize when I woke up, but in my dream I remembered her from 'missing flyers', anyways she explained that they were going to give me a transfusion in my thigh and monitor me and my health.  When I woke up I swear there was a 'needle' mark on my left leg and for 2 days the area was tender.  About 4-6 months later I got another cold sore, darn aliens in my dream didn't fix it at all :o( .

    Dream 2 w/the aliens:
Dream 2 was basically that they abducted me again and they were yelling at me for not taking better care of myself.  They told me if I continued down my current path that I would only live 27 more years (which when I woke up I did the math and it put me at 62).  I think the message here was a good one - but I'm like 99.9% sure I was not abducted by aliens.

I've had other dreams where I've argued with FI and I woke up all mad at him for being so mean to me.

    EDIT:  Spelling is hard

False. You DO need a costume in 15 days. I was going to wait until the day before to tell you, but now you've spoiled the surprise. ;)

    ----

Short backstory - earlier this year, I had one employee who was causing me some issues. He ended up quitting (by emailing my boss, not me, and by giving ZERO days notice). Good riddance to bad rubbish, I thought. Well, about a month ago, my boss comes to my desk to tell me that he has gotten a new job, and it is with the company that is one floor below us. Oh yay. I've seen him a couple of times (he flat out ignored me once) but I have a kind of deep-seated fear of running into him, just because I don't want to talk to him ever again.

Anyway, I had a dream a couple nights ago that I was somewhere and he was there and it was a small place so there was no avoiding him. We had to talk several times and it was awkward and horrible. Meanwhile, a guy I used to work with who was always AWFUL to me was also there. So I woke up thinking thank God that wasn't real life!

    Still here and still fabulous!

  • I had a dream earlier this week, where I don't remember what happened but I felt stressed, overwhelmed and really busy.  I felt like that the whole day at work, despite everything being great happy and not stressful.

I had a dream the other night where I was at our timeshare in the Bahamas.

I had a dream last night that I got to see inside someone's brain and they had some kind of mental illness. I remember feeling so sad.

  • Geez, yall have some crazy dreams!!

I've woken up covered in sweat crying after I had a dream that my then BF died in a motorcycle race crash. I was flipping out and he was in bed next to me. It was hard to admit what had happened.

I also had a dream I was bite by a snake and woke up breathing really fast and sweating.

But I don't recall my dreams most of the time. Actually now that I think about it I don't remember the last time I dreamed.

I haven't had one in a long time, and I hope to God they are gone, but I was having recurring nightmares about being stuck in a terrorist attack. They have been all over the place (Boston, traveling to other cities) and all sorts of different locations (malls, train stations, schools) but always a terrorist attack. I get freaked out by them for a good day at least. I'm really into crime shows and I took many criminal investigation classes in college so we watch tons of movies about it and I think it stemmed from that.

  • It amazes me what the brain can come up with! I've had a few, somewhat scary reoccurring dreams over the years. I go thought periods where I remember my dreams almost every night...and other times where I don't remember anything for a long time.

I've really only had 3-4 dreams that were so upsetting that I still felt it was real when I woke up.

    1. After my parents divorced I had a really gory dream about finding my dad's sevored head on the sidewalk.

    2. I had a dream I was having a knock down, drag out arguement with H. Like @Dignity100 I felt mad at H all day even though I knew none of it was real.

    3. I had one where H was killed (nothing gory or anything, but I'd lost him forever) and I just couldn't cope. I remember waking up and just hugging him in bed like I was never going to let go.

    4. This one - about being fired.

Kind of wondering if @southernpeach89 is right about having more vivid/bad dreams when stressed. When I think about the ones i've listed, they've all been around stressful times or big changes in my life.

I'm dying to see @cu97tiger and her hubby in costume now! @tuarceatha - do you remember what kind of costumes they were wearing??

  • I unfortunately usually only have nightmares.  As a child they were so bad that I often woke up on the floor after thrashing out of bed.  Gory ones about death (usually of my loved ones) and being chased/attacked. Of late, they are usually airplane crashes, which I don't get since I'm not afraid to fly.

The most recent nightmare was with H and myself in a hotel that was haunted ... there were knocks on the door and knocks throughout the hallway on the walls but no one was there.  H was holding me in the dream to comfort me and I looked over into a mirror and I was bald from chemo and looked like I was dying in the mirror (even though my perception of myself in the dream in general was a healthy woman).  I have no idea how my mind comes up with this stuff.

I remember a lot of my dreams and pretty vividly too, like colors, smells, how I was feeling. last night I had a dream that my cat got out (indoor cats only) and I was chasing him around and so afraid he would get lost. This was happening in the neighborhood where I grew up though which was weird. Every now and then I'll have a dream where someone or something is after me (last time is was a doll) and I'll try to scream in the dream but nothing comes out, it's like I have no voice. H will wake me up because he hears me trying to scream in real life. I am completely afraid of heights so when I am stressed, I have dreams about driving up SUPER steep hills but I'm not buckled in so I fall backwards in to the back seat and the car is out of control and I feel like I'm falling. I HATE those! Edit: there were paragraphs, I swear!

@allusive007 Yup. They were both dressed like this:

    Next question.

  • Short-time lurker chiming in because I had the most awful dream last night! I was driving behind my boyfriend, Jake, on the way to a halloween party. I had our friend Jacob in my car with me. My boyfriend called me, saying that the next turn was really sharp so I should be careful. Then, when I got to the turn (an off ramp), I couldn't see his car. My friend Jacob screamed at me to stop the car and pull over.

When I did, I saw Jake's car, all smashed up. I could hear Jake saying "ow, ow, ow..." over and over in a quiet voice. Jacob screamed and told me to stay where I was. But I could tell he found Jake, so I ran over to him. Jake was lying on the ground- his body was all mangled and bloody and awful. He died right there. I started crying and screaming in my dream and in real life. Jake woke me up and I was crying. Jacob, who is staying with Jake until he moves into his new apartment this weekend, was there too, and they were both so freaked out and kept asking me what was wrong. When I finally told them, they spent almost an hour trying to calm me down and tell me that it wasn't real.

I was so upset about the dream that I gave myself a nose bleed and couldn't go back to sleep. It was so real to me. I can't get the images out of my head so I can't focus on work at all! :(

  • When I was a kid I had two really vivid dreams that basically traumatized me for life. I was stupidly allowed to watch Arachnophobia one night when I was 8 or so, and I had a really bad lucid dream afterwards. I woke up and my eyes were open and everything, and I saw a giant tarantula right by my face that was slowly working its way up to my ceiling fan. I ran downstairs screaming and got my mom, and she grumpily came to my room, turned on my light, and said nothing was there. I could see the thing crawling around my ceiling fan, but she said nothing was there. I slept on the couch that night and was too scared to go in my room for a couple of days. I had that dream one other time a few weeks later, too. Scared the shit out of me.
