3 Hour Drive

We just moved and plan on having our wedding by us. Most of our family and guests will have approximately a 3 hour drive. That's not too bad for a daytime wedding and reception ending by 5 pm, right?

Ehhh, I'd be less than thrilled to make a 6 hour round trip for an afternoon wedding - especially if it will only be a 3 hour cake and punch deal.

What's your reasoning for wanting the wedding near you instead of where most of your guests are? Planning a wedding 3 hours away isn't the easiest thing, but it can definitely be done without too much difficulty.

  • Six hours is a lot of driving in one day. I'd probably skip it or want to spend the night. Any chance on moving it closer to your guests? We are 1,000 miles from where both of our families live, and we long-distanced planned the whole thing because it made more sense for the two of us to travel than to expect our entire families to. It wasn't hard, especially since are families were in the area and willing to help us out with some of the planning.

  • I would not be driving 6 hours in one day. If I were to attend your wedding I would be coming in the day prior and staying that night (or leaving that night depending on budget and what we felt like). Also what time would you want your wedding to start? If people will be driving 3 hours in then you don't want it to start too early because then people may have to get up and get on the road no later then 8.

  • My daughter had several guests make a 3 hour drive for her daytime wedding.  She had a late morning ceremony and a brunch reception.  They were happy that they could leave before 5:00PM, and not have to spend the night.

  • We have driven 4 hours one way, and back again, in the same day. Was it ideal? No. But we knew it would not be a late night, nor one involving alcohol. I preferred being home by midnight, sleeping in my own bed, with all of Sunday to myself, than waste a night in a hotel and losing a good chunk of Sunday on top of it.
  • I definitely would not drive 3 hours there and back in a day.  Just wouldn't happen for me.  Would I spend the night? Sure!  I'd make a weekend of it.
