Critique my song list?

This is what I've got so far. I wanted to have a good mix of old and new, but I also wanted to avoid cheesy and over-played songs. However, I had to throw some classics in there.

Are there any great songs I'm missing? Do I need to include a few more current songs?

Re: Critique my song list?

  • You put more work into your list than I did mine.  :)

I just told our DJ the special songs, a do not play list, and said play the "Rat Pack/Michael Buble" for the cocktail hour, instrumental type stuff during lunch and then whatever you want for the dancing part.  We had just a few "must" play songs and told the DJ to use his best judgement.  Our only request was that if someone wanted some hip hop type music to make sure he played the clean version.

  • Looks good! I would be boogying my ass off at your wedding! This is definitely a personal preference but one of our 'crowd pleasing' dance songs was Blurred Lines. We had the dance floor packed during that song!

Our wedding band gave us a huge list of songs they play and we just gave them a list of songs that we loved. It helped to pick songs we like/don't like from a huge list, rather than compiling our own.

  • I was going back and forth about adding Blurred Lines.
  • Kudos for adding Led Zep and the Beach Boys!!!

  • We did our own music too!!  Had different songs but the same general artists and feel - we're still getting comments about how everyone loved our music playlist (and we've had lots of requests to send it to people for events) so I think it looks AWESOME!!!!

One piece of advice is to make sure you space the slow songs really well!  One of our mistakes was not playing enough slow songs later in the evening, just because we got through a lot of our playlist than we thought we would because dinner was done really quickly!
  • Re: Blurred Lines - even the people that were complaining about hating that song were dancing to it at our wedding :)  definite crowd pleaser!
  • I love your playlist! I would add Blurred Lines. Personally, I love that song, and I will probably add it to our list. Our crowd is a party crowd ;) I love Run around Sue and I Love Love LOVE Let's stay together :D

  • I love it!  We have very similar tastes, and I will definitely be borrowing some of these ideas!

I have heard that "All of My Love" is about the death of Robert Plant's daughter, but I have no idea if that's true.  We're playing "Ain't Wastin' Time No More" by Allman Brothers for our recessional which I'm sure is about a death, so don't let it stop you if you love it.  But maybe look into it if that kind of thing would bother you. :)

  • I think you need some Michael Bublé. Otherwise, sounds like a blast!
  • Everything sounds awesome!  but I think there are other crowd pleasers besides Blurred Lines. I wouldn't play a song that promotes misogyny or rape in my wedding.

I guess this is a know your crowd type thing? Because my crowd certainly wouldn't be pleased about a song about rape. I HATE hearing this song at weddings.

Re: Blurred Lines, I dislike it for all the usual feminist reasons, but also...because it sucks. Laziest bass-line in pop music. It's catchy the way MSG-laden chips are tasty--yeah, you keep eating them, but not because they're actually GOOD.

ETA: I really love your playlist, however!
