Annoyed with the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge? Watch this.

I did the Ice Bucket Challenge and donated. Everyone I know personally did the same, so I suppose I am sort of defending it. I get some people don't donate, but watch this video and maybe this will make you (general) a little less annoyed?

Wow that was really sad. At first I thought the ice bucket challenge was silly, but it was because when I first started seeing it on my newsfeed it was more of a dump water on your head or donate to any charity. So people dumped water. Now, the message is clearer. Yea, it is pretty silly, but if it brings awareness to ALS, then that's what matters. To be honest, before this challenge, I did not really know what ALS was. I had a very vague idea. Now I know, and I'm sure that is the case for other people. At the end of the day something - as silly as it is - that brings such awareness to this disease is a good thing in my opinion. 

Good for you for taking the challenge and for donating! 

I also thought of something this morning. My job has a huge charity campaign each year. It goes on for like a month and a half, and each department sets up goals to raise money for different charities. They then hold different events - movie days in the office, karaoke nights, bake sales, fashion shows, etc. to fundraise. Each year the company raises millions of dollars which gets distributed to different charities (this past year we raised $4.8 mill). I never saw ALS as one of the causes to raise money to. Maybe after the heightened awareness that this challenge brought, ALS will now be one of the causes that we donate to.

The bolded is the main reason this challenge has been so upsetting to me...i have posted the same comment on every single video my FB friends have posted "So what is ALS?" and not one person knew what the fuck they were raising awareness for. 

My grandpa passed away from ALS when I was one. It was the only reason my family was ok with my mom having me at 17 they all knew I'd be the only grandbaby he got to meet. Thank you so much for posting this video Rebecca; I'm sobbing, but maybe if this vudeo makes it's rounds people will actually know what they are helping.

afox007 - I'm sorry to hear about your grandpa. I totally agree that some people are just going around dumping water on themselves because it is some sort of fad, and not knowing what it is all about. So far, on my newsfeed, most people took the time to educate themselves. My friend took the challenge, spoke a bit about ALS on his video, and posted a link on his page encouraging others to educate themselves as well. For the record, I have not taken the challenge, but I did do some research to see what the challenge was about and to learn more about ALS. 

I agree with you also that it can be upsetting watching some of the videos. Yesterday, once of my distant cousins posted a video of himself dumping ice in a bucket. Then - he had someone dump Heineken down his mouth, and that was the end of the video. Clearly, he had NO idea what the challenge was about, and I found the whole thing to be disgusting, disrespectful, ignorant, and just plain stupid.

@pinkcow13 I'm happy at least most of your friends are taking the time to learn a little about it. Your cousin on the other hand I kinda want to smack, right alongside my little brother who did a video with a beer in one hand and his bikini clad gf in the other. Basically since they are using the words ALS instead of Lou Gehrig's even he didn't know why he was doing it and just thought it was fun to make the video.

I think it's getting ridiculous to what lengths people are going to have a bucket of ice thrown on them.  

The only reason they were even there was for the ice bucket challenge.  So yes, it did have something to do with the challenge.
