NWR: Stainless steel a must?

Hey everyone!

So my about 15 year old fridge died, and we browsed for a new one this weekend.

I'm not crazy about stainless steel, just because it's hard to clean, and they mostly have gray enamel sides, which is the first thing you see looking into my kitchen.  Dents and scratches also show like crazy... those floor models are rough!

I feel like it might be expected to get the SS though, if I sell this house in the next 10 years. (Though I hope the trend goes away!)  All of my other appliances are white, although likely to be replaced in the next 5 years as well.

What do you all think?

SO and I are leaning to just getting another white one, but I don't want it to be a "bad investment."

ETA:  Here is a pic looking into my kitchen right now.  The fridge there now is a temporary smaller one (maybe 18 cf), the old dead fridge was much larger, and the new one will be bigger and more imposing too (probably 29 cf)!

  • Eh.  I don't think there's anything wrong with a white fridge, especially if it matches your other appliances.  In 10 years stainless steel will probably look dated, like a trend from the past.  If you aren't selling your house for 10 years, I wouldn't worry so much about resale right now.

  • We've had to replace all of our appliances in the last year and they're all white. We have white cabinets and thought they looked better. I hope that's not a bad call!

But seriously, I doubt it makes a big difference.

  • I agree with PP.

Also, depending on the cabinets and overall decor/colors of your kitchen, I think black appliances are easier to clean than SS and look nicer than white.

    Just a thought.

  • I have no idea when I might sell the house - I bought it as a forever spinster house and met SO a month later ;-)

It's a terrible school district though, so I figure we have 5-10 years before that would really matter, if it does.

Work could change though, who knows!

Thanks for telling me it will be okay, that's exactly what SO said - while white might not be a selling point, it won't detract from the sale either.

  • I don't think SS appliances should be a deal-breaker on the sale of a home. I prefer white anyway, and I think the SS trend will pass or at least fade a bit over time. Go with what you like.

  • My cabinets right now are brown but we're planning to paint them white hopefully soon!

  • I happen to love the SS look, but if it's going to be the first thing you seen when you walk in to the kitchen and it's not going to match your other stuff, then don't go with it. It will just bug you. I totally agree with PPs. Get what works for you. Don't worry about trends.

  • I personally don't see the appeal of SS. It looks too "industrial" to me and hello- magnets don't stick to it so that's just no fun!! I just bought a brand new white stove and I plan to sell my house soon.

  • I really hate SS, but I can understand its appeal. That said, most of the houses I've been looking at don't include appliances so I'd be thrilled to get anything that worked - it can always get replaced later!

  • I prefer SS and if you did go that direction I 100% suggest the fingerprint free SS because that will help with cleaning issues.

But if you like the white look then go with white.  I understand thinking about the whole selling the house and value etc when purchasing appliances but if you aren't flipping this house then I prefer people buy what they like/want rather then be so concerned with what potential buyers years down the road may think.  Remember you have to live with it now so it may as well be something you like.

  • Get what makes you happy. You have to live there, after all.

  • I have SS on all of my kitchen appliances. I am mostly fine with it. Except on my fridge. We have really hard water, to the point where filtering it really doesn't even do much.

The water dispenser on the freezer door drips sometimes, and then it drips down the freezer door. Which has now left really nice hard water buildup and RUST on the door.

It is very VERY irritating. I don't know how to clean it. I do know that in my next kitchen, we will not be getting SS.

Another vote for white. SS is great and all, but it would be better to match your kitchen. Who's to say that the buyer in 5-10 years won't want to get a new fridge no matter what because it's "old." People are weird. Sidenote: My parents sold the house I grew up in a couple of years ago. The kitchen was a very generous size but had white appliances and white laminate countertops. The real estate agent tried to convince my parents to spend 5-7 grand on new countertops and they said "well, lets just wait and see." Lo and behold, the first 2 people to look at the house (first day on the market) both put in offers on the house. And the couple who bought the house actually told us that it was the kitchen that sold them. Just food for thought - not everyone is a "house hunter" on HGTV. :) ETF: Paragraphs… I swear there were some!
  • As someone who bought their first place in recent years, the color of the appliances didn't factor in for me. We'd only lived in apartments until then and were stuck with just whatever, the appeal of buying meant doing whatever we wanted to do with the place. So if the previous owners had bright orange with polka-dots appliances it didn't matter, we'd upgrade to our own vision when we could.

Chef husband is all about SS.   If we are buying the appliance there is not other option.  Given the opportunity his kitchen would look like a commercial kitchen with open shelves, walk-in coolers and metro racks everywhere.

    I prefer SS.  I can't stand white.

When in comes to buying a house it's not a deal breaker though.   Appliances can be swapped out.  NBD.

That all said, unless you are trying to sell soon, get what you want. You need to be happy where you live,  not always thinking about re-sell.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I think SS is a plus with buyers, but not a deal breaker.  Anyone who is not buying a house just cos there are white appliances is going to find something else to complain about if you do have SS.

As long as the avocado green appliances don't come back into style because those were just bad.
I painted a wall in the living room of my last house avocado green. It was awesome.

As for appliances though, I hope this "oiled bronze"/copper look catches on. So gorgeous.

Or cobalt blue. That stove is a sexy beast.

I want that in a mini version to put in my office cubicle.

  • We have cherry cabinets and cherry wood floors in our kitchen. We have all white appliances. I love them....it makes the room feel brighter and the white pops out. I have nothing against stainless...I just know white looks better in our kitchen with the cabinets and floor. I also think white is classic and stainless will die out. But by that time you'd probably want or need new appliances anyway. :)
  • I personally like ss or black. White gets too dirty IMHO.

When we were house hunting, every kitchen that we went into that had black or white appliances, my husband (then FI) would say, "I don't like the appliances". I always said, "honey first, they might be taking them with them, second we can buy new ones".

Lucky for us we got a house with SS appliances, so he's happy. Did I mention I do all the cooking. :)

  • If you talk to a realtor, they'll tell you that SS is a big selling feature. If you plan to put your house on the market, I would take that into consideration especially if other selling features (i.e. school district) aren't up to par. I agree with Maggie, though - get fingerprint free SS. We got a new SS dishwasher and it's not fingerprint free.... I'm about to toss that sucker out the window.

If you don't plan to sell any time soon, get whatever you want. For the look you want, check into Elmira. They have SEXY throwback appliances.

Even if you do want to list it pretty soon, you could always take your new sexy fridge with you and offer the buyers a $1000-2000 seller's concession/credit toward a new one of their choice. OR if you buy a new house before you list the old one and it comes with a fridge you don't like, trade out the fridges before you list.

    I'm with this.
  • FYI. Little cleaning tip for stainless steal " ENDUST" works great! !
  • I think it all depends on how well it goes with your kitchen.  We needed a fridge when we moved and MIL just could not believe we did not want to get a SS one.  It would have looked horrible in our kitchen (the un-matching sides would have drove me crazy!), and I hate how often they need to be cleaned (finger prints galore).  I could get over having to wipe it down every day, but it just would not have looked right, so we went with white and have never regretted it once.  MIL of course has to comment how we should have invested in a SS one, but we were happy saving money and having a perfectly good working fridge in our kitchen :)

  • I used to have white kitchens (white cabinets, white appliances, black granite) so white worked well. Our new place has espresso stained cabinets and the model has the same with SS, so we went with SS. One thing we did was get a counter depth fridge. You can't see the sides at all. I'm sure not every set up can accommodate that, but look into it if you like SS but don't like the mismatched sides.

  • Black or stainless steel are pretty.  White shows dirt easily, is not very pretty, and looks a bit cheap, IMO.  Honestly, as a potential buyer, this would be a project room for me.  Depending on my money situation (ie. if I didn't have a whole lot and was fine working on rooms down the road or whatever) I might or might not be interested.
