I'm second-guessing our first dance song.

Re: I'm second-guessing our first dance song.

  • Same here - no special song - so we just listened to a bunch. We weren't doing the traditional spotlight dances at our wedding so the only planned music was my processional. Originally I chose "Feels like Home" by Chantal Kreviazuk but H thought that sounded sad so as a surprise to me he switched it to "All of Me" by John Legend. I love both songs!

  • Our first dance was "Good Feeling" by Violent Femmes. It was easy for us to decide. We made a list of our top five love songs and went with the only one we had in common.

I'm not a John Legend fan so I would go with the Norah Jones. I love her voice.
  • Sorry for thread-jacking but do you guys think 2 1/2 minutes is too short of a song for a first dance? My FI and I really like "How long will I love you" by Ellie Goulding, but it's a short song. The lyrics make me so warm and fuzzy though!

OP, I'm leaning more toward Nora Jones. :)

    The shorter the better!

  • DH and I never really had a "song" either. We did a lot of cultural things for our wedding, so we thought that trying to incorporate Irish and Irish-American bands in the reception music would be fun. We listened to SO MUCH music, and found our song by accident (we had originally picked a Kenny Chesney song).

Come Away with Me was the song DH and I chose.  Mostly because it can be a waltz and we spent time taking dance lessons before the wedding.  Our other song is Ingrid Michaelson's cover of Can't Help Falling in Love with you.
I love that song but I think that Ingrid Michaelson's cover is too slow. I am not a UB40 fan so that leave the Elvis version.
  • We danced to Ray Lamontagne- You Are the Best Thing. Again- we also didn't have a song and spent a few nights on the couch with Youtube and lists of top 20 wedding songs we found online.

And we actually had the DJ cut it short- songs are longer than you think when you are dancing to them in front of tons of people.

  • I like both songs so I can't offer any clarity on that. However, I can say that you're not the only one who doesn't have a song.

We realized that the closest thing we have to "our song" is one that's completely not appropriate for a first dance: "She Don't Use Jelly" by The Flaming Lips.

I think our song will be Elvis: "I can't help falling in love with you." A decent compromise, though I'd still prefer the UB40 version.

I always tell people two minutes max, so I think you're good.
  • Perfect, thanks guys!

Agree with PPs - the shorter the better.
We faded out the father daughter/ mother son dance song after 90 seconds. I got the thumbs up from the photog that he had the pics he needs and then the DJ just faded it out.

I hate the John Legend song. But I am second guessing myself because I have totally fallen in love with Sam Smith "stay with me".
The words to that song though are pretty much like - I know this isn't love but stay with me anyway.
Yeah that song is about a one night stand.
Oh hahah nevermind. I never actually listen to the verses in songs, I'm just a chorus whore.

  • All of Me was our first dance song.  Luckily for us the song had just come out and wasn't popular yet.  We had another song picked out, but DH heard this on youtube and had me listen.  He was sold, took me a few days and the more I listened to the words, it was our relationship.  But now its all over the place so it makes me happy knowing we got married before the song was uber popular.

Mine is under a minute and a half!  CLICKY

We have a few songs that are sort of ours, but not really first dance material.  He wanted Bouncing 'Round the Room by Phish, haha.  We considered "Waste," but that's what every hippie does for their first dance.

I googled "first dance songs" and found ours on a list.  We love cheesy comedies, and FI can have entire conversations using only comedic movie quotations.  It's sweet and quirky, just like us (I'm sweet, he's quirky :)

OP-I prefer Norah.  All of Me is waaay overplayed right now.  Plus, I think there is a reason you liked it in the first place.  Go with your gut!

  • @lurkergirl‌, I had a feeling you picked that Adam Sandler song. I love it!

A friend used Waste as the last song at his wedding.

We will definitely play Waste at some point!  When we cut the cake, we're going to play "My Sweet One."  I would love to do our intro to Tweezer and our exit to Tweezer Reprise.  FI thinks I'm a filthy hippie for that ;)

  • I know this is a first dance thread, but I would like to thread jack for one post and thank you for starting this thread.  I am obsessed with planning my wedding music, and I am now having a solo dance party to all the songs I want to shake my ass to at my wedding!! :)

  • Agreed, @lurkergirl I'm THRILLED with this thread.. I'm getting such great ideas... and I LOVE YOURS!! I just don't know that I want something super sappy, it's just not me and my FI, but I do love the Ingrid version of Can't help falling in love

I love that Norah Jones song. It's beautiful and she has such a lovely voice. I do like All of Me and I think it is a really nice song as well, but every time I listen to the damn radio (which is pretty rare) that song comes on at least once and I'm getting sick of it. I think your first choice was for the best.

  • Our song is Love Story by Taylor Swift. It didn't seem like a good song to dance to so we played it while we signed the papers during the ceremony and ended up with The Piano Guys piano and cello cover of A Thousand Years for the first dance.

I don't hear All of Me that often on the radio. I love that song so that would be my vote. We used it for our recessional. The Lindsey Sterling version is really good!

  • I don't know how to insert a video, but this was SO's latest suggestion:

http://youtu.be/OPh5MFPOPLY (I Swear by the Minions)

He also said "Rude" by Magic would be a good one... He clearly doesn't process lyrics! lol  He hears "marry" and suddenly it can be "our song".

My best friend had All of Me, and I did like it, although that right there threw it out using it for ourselves.

I like country, which would be soooo much easier, but he really can't stand it.  He may compromise with Darius Rucker if I can find something of his, though.  I also have high hopes for the new Lady A album!

  • We used "All of Me" for our first song.  From the first time we heard it, we knew that it was what we wanted to dance to because it really did describe our relationship (as I'm sure other people have said).  It's definitely not over-played in this area at all.  Most of our guests had never heard it before.  I still love that song.
  • Ok, I'm sticking with Norah! There definitely was a reason we picked it.
  • I like both options.

In case you change your mind, I really like the cover Lolo83 provided. I think once a song gets popular, people tend to reject it because it's overplayed to them. But many songs get to that point. Come away with me was nonstop on the radio when it came out. Norah Jones was a huge hit and the hot new artist. I think many would have considered the song overplayed at the time too.

What's fun about a popular song is that you're likely to hear it for years to come. Every time you hear it, it will bring you right back to that first dance. So I wouldn't let the popularity wage in your decision.
  • I think the words to Come Away With Me really fit us as a couple. However, the song doesn't necessarily make me emotional. But All of Me tends to give me the feels.

However, do I really need our first dance song to make me emotional? I'll probably be weepy while I'm walking down the aisle. And while we're exchanging vows. And while I'm dancing with my dad. And during the toasts. So that's probably enough!

Personally, I'd go for the one that evokes emotion over what sounds better on paper. (Just like men could look perfect on paper but it's all about the chemistry between you two.)

But you're right, when the day comes it'll all be emotional and meaningful. I just love that tingly felling that runs within me when I hear a certain song.

Different situation but FWIW, when I asked my dad what song he wanted to dance to with me, he said "it doesn't matter. We could dance the Hokey Pokey and I'll still be crying like a fool, because I'm dancing with my girl."
