Tux vs. Suit-- Help please! Opinions needed

I have always been of the mind that the groom should wear a tux to the wedding. Apparently my future mother in law has suggested that my fiance just buy a suit instead, that way he'll always have one and it's a better investment than a tux rental, etc. My wedding won't be super formal, but my bridesmaid dresses will be long and I just bought a $1300 dress...so it seems to me that a tux shouldn't be out of the question? I am kind of at a loss about this. I am looking for advice. What do you think about a tux vs. suit? When is it appropriate for either? Any help is appreciated.

  • I told my FI to buy a suit as well. It's a great long term investment if you get a quality one. There's also a question of time of day and venue. A tux isn't generally considered appropriate for daytime or outdoor weddings, but IMO, it's up to the two of you.

A suit is pretty much appropriate for any wedding, except for a black tie wedding (which is kind of rare these days, and there are many things that must happen in order for it to be a true black tie wedding).  A tuxedo is very formal evening wear and traditionally should only be worn from 6:00 p.m. and on, (thinking of you @CMGragain).  A tuxedo is rented and the money is "lost" after the wedding day, whereas a man could always use a nice suit.

  • Okay, thanks! Our wedding will be in the afternoon so maybe a suit is the better way to go.

    Most definitely!
  • Suit!

  • My fiancé is buying a tuxedo.  Renting one is a waste.  He already has suits and wants to be fancy.
  • Also, the way many men wear the tuxedos these days, they really just look like suits. It would be one thing if you wanted him in a shawl-collared jacket, ruffled shirt, and cumberbun. But a nice black suit with a vest and a tie (or bow tie) isn't going to look very different at all from a typical tuxedo these days.
  • Definitely go with a suit!
  • Thanks everyone, we've decided on a suit!
