I'm 5'3 and I ended up wearing a trumpet silhouette. I originally wanted a mermaid, but the fit was wrong for my hight. I found trumpets gave me the shape I was looking for while looking good.
I'm 5'3 and first went with a mermaidy dress. Alterations were super annoying because I didn't realize it would be such a nightmare to shorten the bodice/fitted part of the dress. It was hitting just above my knees which looked awkward at my height, and the alterations team started freaking out about how they couldn't change the design of the dress. Even though on the model (or any taller person) the bodice would hit mid-thigh and look more proportional.
I've since gone with a dress that has a similar fit and flair shape, but no hard line at the place it flairs out to cut me off. Much more flattering on me.
My petite SIL (about 5'2") went with a dress that was either a trumpet or fit and flare and she looked stunning in the dress. Honestly she looked great in most of the dresses she tried, but the trumpet and fit and flare dresses seemed to look the best. Some mermaid gowns without too much poofing at the bottom looked good as well. Although she looked pretty in ball gowns, they did seem to swallow her up a little bit. I'd say just get out there and start trying on dresses! You'll find something that works for you.
My sister is 4'11" and tried on a bunch of different shapes. She wound up in a fit and flare with a "petal" bottom that wasn't too poofy. For her, the proportion of the gown as well as the fabric made a huge difference... the satin ball gowns just didn't work on her petite frame. Similar to @jenijoyk, my sister tried on a few that had a bodice that was too long and cut across her legs. The one she eventually chose luckily came in Petite which helped with the proportions.
Hello, I'm also five feet tall! I'm curvy so I thought I was going to walk out of the shop with a mermaid/trumpet style dress, but ended up trying on a bunch of different styles, and walked out with a classic A-line.
Re: Wedding Dresses for Petite Brides
(The way the model is posing makes the dress look ugly...why did they have her pose like that?)
