Dressing up to travel: yea or nay? Also, how do you entertain yourself?

  • I always go in yoga pants, but that's pretty much all I own anyway.  And yes, I regularly pay $100 per pair as I often shop at Lulu.  I'm a PE teacher, so they're my work clothes too.  I think I might have restless leg syndrome, or at least some of the symptoms of it, and I often find that my legs get itchy and twitchy at the end of the day.  It's usually worse when I'm in jeans, so I can't fly in them.  I go crazy.

I take my kindle, DH's iPad on the plane, and always headphones, as our two national carries have seat back tv's on 95% of flights.  I'll happily watch movies, though I try to sleep if I'm on a typical sleeping time flight, or depending on the time change.

Yes. After you purchase your economy ticket and get your confirmation you can go back into your account and upgrade to 1st class. It puts you on standby and if for some reason you are not upgraded you get your money & miles returned to you. We've never not been upgraded and our friends who told us about this have also always been upgraded.

This is how I've flown 99.8% of the time. I've also never not been upgraded.

Twice, I've had to use Southwest and that's when I buy two seats and I will pay to early board and claim both seats. I do not freaking care what Mr Pushy or Ms Rude want and feel they're entitled to. I did share the cross country flight with a toddler rear facing in the window, open center and I had the aisle. Her mother and baby sibling were one row behind us, and all four of us had as much fun as possible while stuck on a plane. I'm not a total bitch. But I paid for my seats, neither flight was 100% full, I am not moving.

The seats are something like 15" wide. Even if I diet to a 6% body fat, I still have big hips over 15". Plus my legs in particular are a lot of muscle.

I'm hardly skinny. But I'm not sure it's so much fat shaming as much as it's how to stuff as many people in as small an area as possible. Even my tiny friend (5'1 & a size 0 or 00. I could hate her.) finds plane seats cramped. Part of this is my bitch coming out - but in this day and age, who doesn't know plane seats are tiny. Why do more people complain at the airport vs before by avoiding flights if possible and letting it be known? And don't bitch about all your money should get you more room. If that's what your money should get you, buy two damn seats.

But we're doing Germany, Sweden, Finland and Canada. Tickets are the single biggest cost as we booked first class.

I wear leggings and a sweater dress or jeans and a nice top with a sweater and scarf when travelling. I wear my bulkiest flat shoes/boots. I only wear yoga pants out when I'm going to yoga class or I'm picking up DH from work late at night and I go straight from the apartment to the car and back. I almost always fly Air Canada and they have personal tvs with movies so I watch movies the whole flight. I download a new book to my iPad before a trip so I can read in the airport or if I don't have time to watch a whole movie. ETA: DH is 6'4. We can't afford to upgrade to business class or 1st class. We always request an aisle seat for him to be able to stretch out in the aisle occasionally, and we do seat selection before the flight to try to get the exit row or bulkhead seats. Exit row/bulkhead are usually only a little more expensive than economy and give you a lot of extra space.

I wondered at least if an aisle seat might be helpful.  It can be really difficult to get the exit row seats, even when the airlines charge more for them, but I'm generally that person who grabs the seats the moment I'm able to.

DH says if you can't get an exit or bulkhead row to put your FI in an aisle seat so he can stretch out or easily stand up and stretch during the flight.

Thanks.   I usually like the aisle for the same reason, but I guess I'm going to have to suck that one up.  I just hate being crammed between two people.

Me too. I get motion sick and am better sitting at the window. On in Canada flights I get the window and DH sucks it up and sits in the middle seat. On overseas flights DH gets an aisle and I suck it up and take the middle seat and have some gravol.

That's a good idea though.  Come to some solution where we're switching up who gets the worse seat.

You should book the aisle for him and the window for you because chances are no one will pick the seat between strangers. If it turns out someone does sit in the middle seat you can just ask to switch but in my experience it always works out that we have the middle seat free. Also on those small EasyJet planes we just both sit in the aisle across from each other.
Unfortunately those Australian flights tend to be pretty full, but one seat on either side of the aisle doesn't sound terrible.

  • You definitely should.  I recommend doing tons of travel while your based in Indonesia.  But I've always found it ridiculous that takes at least six hours to get from Sydney to the closest country to the North, and three and a half to the west.
