Question about Islam

Re: Question about Islam

  • Don't waste your time. People who post stuff like that can't be reasoned with. De-friend and move along.

  • beethery, that is one of my favorite movies!  Last night my husband and I went to a church service and the guy leading worship said "Let's give it up for God" and I giggled and thought of "Saved!"

Just unfriended her.  DH and I will decide tomorrow (once I have cooled down) if we still want them over Saturday night.
  • When people post shit like that my first reaction is to list the atrocities that have been committed by people in the name of Christianity. Hell, the stuff people are STILL doing in the same of Christianity.

But really I would just tell her to lose your number and that you never want to speak to her again. Because she is an enormous, racist piece of shit and should be shunned.

  • I'm guessing Pope Franicis is too liberal for her?  Pretty sure he doesn't have the same opinion about Islam.
Funny you say that.  I just shared this with her.  This was said by Pope Francis.

Turning to mutual respect in interreligious relations, especially between Christians and Muslims, we are called to respect the religion of the other, its teachings, its symbols, its values. Particular respect is due to religious leaders and to places of worship. How painful are attacks on one or other of these!

It is clear that, when we show respect for the religion of our neighbours or when we offer them our good wishes on the occasion of a religious celebration, we simply seek to share their joy, without making reference to the content of their religious convictions.

Regarding the education of Muslim and Christian youth, we have to bring up our young people to think and speak respectfully of other religions and their followers, and to avoid ridiculing or denigrating their convictions and practices.

Well, I am a conservative Christian but NOTHING like your friend.  I am Protestant and I adore what Pope Francis said above.  I do recall reading it awhile back and thinking, "Yes, this is what it means to show the love of Christ!".  I hope he is Pope for a very long time and I hope the world listens to what he has to say.  (I think your friend is a fruit loop who makes the rest of us look badly)
  • Thanks, @AlexisA01.  I'm offended and hurt on your behalf that people are saying these things about your faith.
  • DEFRIEND.
This.  Someone who would say all of that is not going to be convinced.

  • I am 100% in the camp of "can't we all just get along?".

I was raised by a Jewish mother and Christian father and I am so happy to be the well rounded and open person they raised me to be. I was also blessed to have been taught by a very open minded and liberal Rabbi that spent our 11th grade (post confirmation year) visiting different religious places of prayer. The #1 thing we learned was how much our religions had in common.

OP - Stinks you may lose a friend over this, but WOW that is bad. It's bad to think that way but it is worse to then blast it on FB to try to convince others. I don't think I could be friends with such a person.

I had to start unfollowing/unfriended people that were over the top political. UGH I don't got o FB for my news people, I go to catch up with out of town friends and family (and maybe catch some drama).

Sadly, it's kind of where I am right now.  She has also made some tacky remarks regarding Ferguson, MO targeting a certain raicial group.  ahem.
  • I also have a friend like this that on Facebook, I just can't. I unfollowed her to preserve the relationship. It's odd because she is nothing like that in person.

  • Religious bigotry is no different than racial bigotry.  Would you be friends with someone who used the "n" word in conversation?

Christians. Jews, and Muslims all worship the same God.  They share the same religious origins.  They do not share all the same religious beliefs.  Ignorance and prejudice are very sad in any culture.

  • Sorry you will probably lose a friend this way, Sarahbear.  She sounds totally ignorant and bigoted.

My high school bestie, one of the most peaceful, progressive, and smartest ladies I know, is a practicing Muslim.  I was lucky to grow up in a really diverse community, so I already had personal experience with people of a lot of different faiths and races before I was old enough to absorb a lot of the racist shit that flies around in the media.  I think it's easier to buy into that fear mongering when you are isolated, and/or purposely only surround yourself with people who think the same way you do.

My friend and I recently had a pretty long conversation about how her husband (who unfortunately shares a name with a world leader often considered a terrorist), has been urged by mentors to change his name at several points throughout his career as a dentist.  She is genuinely concerned that if they have to move for her job in the next year, her husband won't be able to find a dental practice that will hire him because they'll never get past his name on the resume.

It's shameful and makes me so angry for them.  This is not the way Americans are supposed to treat each other.

"I'm not a rude bitch.  I'm ten rude bitches in a large coat."

  • The crappy thing is, she's one of my best friends.  She & her husband are coming over on Saturday.  I'm so annoyed by her ignorance right now that I want to tell her not to bother.  She is DEFINITELY a right-wing nut.  She used to work for a group who protests outside of Planned Parenthood, and left that job to homeschool because the Catholic school she was sending her daughter to was "messing up her kid".

    sigh.

I just unfollowed her on Facebook.

I'd go buy a copy of the Quran and have it sitting on your table when she comes over. :)

I'm not religious, but I do have copies of Bible & Quran in my phone (I've read Bible, in process of reading Quran), since I figure it's good to have knowledge of the major religious/political groups in our world. And to be able to defend my views against people like your friend. I don't think you can rightfully hate or negatively judge any group based off rumor and misunderstandings.

Islam is a peaceful religion, it just has extremists like any religion. Every Muslim I've met in person has been wonderful.  Honestly, I've met more bad Christians than bad Muslims. The Crusades were started by extremist Catholics.  Westboro Baptist Church is a recent example of extremist Christians.  You could say that Westboro is non-violent, although they are just as cruel. The 1996 Olympic Park bombing in Atlanta, which injured over 100 people, was done by a Christian extremist as revenge against the US for allowing legal abortions. You can't judge the whole religion on the extremists.

She has spouted off some verses of the Quran, so she knows how to pick & choose what she wants to use.

I'm honestly now kind of like this with her

  • My aunt can be the same way. She posted something saying she was supporting the officer who shot that innocent man in Ferguson. I couldn't believe that she would act that way. She gets all of her news from Fox News and I have told her time and again that is not the place to get your news and facts. They are so incredibly biased it's laughable.

I've stayed off of FB today so lord knows what she is saying in regards to the ISIS situation. I was raised by a Catholic mother and a Protestant father where religion wasn't a focus. BF attended Catholic school his entire life up until college. In high school, they studied other religions and even he can't believe some of the bigotry that runs rampant. His best friend fought in Iraq and Afghanistan and even he isn't that bigoted.

When people spout off about the atrocities of the extremists of Islam, I want to remind them of what the Catholic Church and Christianity has done.

  • I have a friend quite like the one Sarahbear describes, but a little bit less... well, hateful, if that makes sense.  He tends to post more ranty pro-Christian stuff than ranty anti-other-religion stuff, so I let it go.  Fortunately I find a lot of what he says amusing, and enjoy arguing with him.  Trust me; he would stand outside Planned Parenthood if such a thing existed in Australia.

  • @Sarahbear31 I saw the title of this thread and thought, "oh, great. I'm going to have to rip some ignorant a-hole a new one!" on account of so much Muslim=terrorist sentiment lately. And then I saw that you were the OP and calmed right down.

Aw, thanks dude. I heart you, too. Muah!
  • @ashley8918, wanna help me rip my "friend" a new one? Did you read the post? Craaaaaaaaazy town.

I just did. GAH. I would have gone on some tangent about how Islam = Terrorists in the same way that Christianity = Westboro Baptist. But, I see someone already mentioned that.

I will likely have more to say when i'm not high on (prescribed) pain killers.

P.S. Fuck you, bum shoulder! OW.
  • Slightly off topic, but I saw this article the other day and thought it was pretty interesting:
