I need wedding dress help/advice

I'm not dress shopping until November, but I have been looking on David's Bridal to form a favorite's list. I found one I really like and it turns out it's a SAMPLE gown and on-line only purchase (I can return) Has any one had any experience buying sample wedding dresses?

I called the store and they do have the dress for about $100.00 more. Do I just pay the $100.00 for a brand new dress or buy the sample one and if it has too many imperfections, I can return it (will have to pay for shipping) Need some advice here.

The other issue is the dress comes in a 18w and I'm probably a 12, so I would have to have it taken in. They said it can cost $100-$200 to do that. I was thinking to go into the store regardless to try it on, but I'm wondering if I'll be able to really tell how the dress will fit since it is larger. And who know's it may not even look good on me!!

Part of my is just thinking to skip the whole thing and just wait until my appt in November . It's just so pretty though. I'm so confused!

Re: I need wedding dress help/advice

  • Honestly, I would wait until you go shopping. I thought I knew what I wanted before my dress shopping day, and I walked out with something totally different because what I thought I wanted didn't look right on me, and what I didn't know I wanted looked great. I think this happens to a lot of brides; you really don't know until you try them on.

    Good luck!

  • I'm confused, the sample is $100 dollars less but is the wrong size and will cost more to alter than the brand new one in the store??

If you think you like the dress than go and try on it, but I wouldn't bother with buying online and dealing with returns etc...just my opinion though!

lol sorry it's confusing! I can at least try it on in the store, because they carry it. Since it's not a sample, it's $100.00 more BUT if I like it, I then, can buy the sample on-line, but I would maybe have to end up returning any way depending what is wring with it, if any, since it is a sample dress. I'm wondering if I should even deal with the sample and just spend the extra $100.00. The other issue is the sample and the in store dress are larger, so I'm wondering if I would have trouble seeing how the dress really looked on me, since it's a larger size dress. I would also have it taken in! Hopefully that's clearer!
  • I would go try the dress on in store.  I would also buy the dress directly from the store for $100 more.  Like you said, you will be spending that much at least to bring in the gown.  You will also need to add in your bustle and hem alteration costs.  If you buy the dress that is your size, you may end up needing no work on the bodice and only need the hem and the bustle.  So you will probably end up saving money in the long run to buy directly from the store.

I also wouldn't buy a sample from online, even though you can make returns.

  • I think you are putting the cart before the horse. I think you should try the dress on to see if you like it and go from there. I would most likely buy the new dress, the $100 wouldn't be worth all the possible headaches.

  • all good points, thank you. I will try  the dress on in the store and if for some reason this IS the dress I'd pay the extra $100.00. FI made a good point. The dress on-line, that is cheaper is actually bigger than the store size. So I would have to pay more to get the dress taken in.

    Thanks everyone!
