I was on buzzfeed and found this Women Remember Their First Periods

I remember my frst almost too well. July 3, 2001 since it was the first time I realized my mom was cheating. My dad picked me up from my friend's house and made me wait in the car while he cried on the front porch to her mom. We spent the rest of the afternoon driving around looking for my mom. I had what I thought was the world's worst stomach ache, but couldn't tell my dad since he was stressed enough.

We gave up took the kids to our towns night before 4th of July street fair and then grabbed McDonalds on the way home. I went to the bathroom and saw some weird brown goopy stuff. It took me half an hour to go downstairs and tell my dad. I knew what it was but couldn't say "period" in front of him so I said their was something weird in my bathing suit bottoms. He started crying again and called my grandma who told him to check the bathroom since my mom should have something. He came back with a box of tampons and me and my grandma both flipped out on him.

He left to go to the store and the poor guy came back with two full grocery bags of pads. I think he grabbed one of everything! I still feel bad that not only did he have to deal with it on his own, but I only used 2 of the pads the next morning I went back to my friend's house and her mom helped me figure out the whole tampon thing.

ETF-I was 11 not 21! I am really bad about years lately!

Re: Because of all the TMI threads

  • You have a crazy story, thankfully mine was nothing like that.

I was eight and my mom kinda figured it was coming.
I had already had to  do some major bra shopping at this point.
It was Christmas break thank god... I remember waking up and freaking - I was actually really excited. I called my mom and work and she just went over what I needed to do.

I can't believe I was so happy about this. I was then the girl who had to help out all the other girls when they got their at school haha.

The only awful thing I remember was going to school unprepared when it first started happening and then getting my period without pads/tampons/anything. I had to make 'pads' out of cheap school toilet paper and pretend to go home sick. Now that was awful...

  • I got my first period December 24, 1997. I was 13.

My dad got all sentimental and said something stupid about it being the "ultimate gift". What the fuck?!
  • Oh my god, that was hilarious.

  • I got mine at home and it was no big deal. I do remember praying over and over that I wouldn't get it in public. My older sis got hers at church. I remember her standing up from her seat afterwards and seeing blood on the seat (fortunately, they were wooden pews, so no fabric chair cushions). And she was wearing light colored pants! She wore my moms coat around her waist afterwards.

But, yea, I prayed and prayed so I was so happy when it was at home.

I woke up with all this blood.  I knew about periods and all that, but it was still gross and kind of scary.  I changed PJs and put on a pad.

  • I remember it was Thanksgiving and I was 12.  We had out of town relatives staying with us that week.  I remember not really freaking out or being too worried.  When I realized I went and found a pad from my mom's stash.  The thing was I kept trying to tell my mom that I got it but with all the company and cooking I couldn't get her alone in a private place and it seemed like when I did my little cousin was there because she wouldn't leave me alone.  I FINALLY was able to tell her and no big deal although she told my aunt and then I had to suffer weird comments the rest of their stay about how special it is and blah, blah, blah.

I can't answer yet because I can't get past your first period date.  Aren't you 24?  So, was your first period at 21?  Is that date a typo?  I am so confused...

As for me, it was April 4, 1996.  I was 11 and in 5th grade.  I only remember those details because it was my brother's birthday, and I was at school.  It happened right before lunch.  I had to ask a mean lunch lady to go to the clinic.  She wouldn't let me until I finally told her that I started my period.  It was mortifying, and looking back probably illegal of her to grill me like that!

Anyway, my mom was coming to the school for my brother's birthday that day, so I just laid down in the clinic until she got there.  Also, elementary clinics are not well stocked--pretty sure the nurse gave me one of her own pads.

My mom called every woman in our family to share the news :/

  • I got mine on a Friday in July 1992. I was 11, and it was 2 months before my 12th birthday. I basically woke up with it. Thankfully no mess to clean up. But I was supposed to go away with my dad that weekend on a motorcycle trip. My mom thought it was best that I stayed home. I was really disappointed. And then walking around with a giant pad all weekend didn't help either. I'm pretty sure I waddled around like a penguin for a good few hours.

Yes!  After my first period, I was like, "So, how 'bout those tampons?"  It took a few months to get the hang of it, but I knew right away that I couldn't deal with the diaper waddle.

Right?? It took me about a year, but that was as long as I could handle the pads. The next summer, I locked myself in the bathroom with a box of Tampax and those directions. And I made it work. I was so proud of myself I came running out of the bathroom to tell my mom.

April 1st.  Very horrible April Fool's Day joke for an eleven year old.  I was mortified but my mom wanted to celebrate my move into womanhood... I shot that down and said I just wanted a normal day.  She noted she'd have to tell my day...extra mortifying.   Thankfully she waited until after I went to bed.

To the above...I've been a pad girl all my life, weird I know, but I never really got the whole 'Yay, tampons are awesome, thing.'  They just feel weird to me and pads (as strange as that is) feels normal.

I don't think so.  That story is not in the article.  She has shared a lot about her family's situation, and this seems to fall right in line.

Same age, same response. My identical twin was 6 months later. I was worried it would never happen.

    Tampons came years later.

  • I was 13, and it was in the summer.  I was on our neighborhood swim team, and it was tradition for the 13+ swimmers to have a lock-in at the end of the season to celebrate.  We played "I never", Spin the bottle, Truth or Dare, etc.  It was the social event of the summer, and it was held at our pool.

Of course, the morning of the lock-in, I get my first period.  I was freaking out because I had no idea how to use a tampon.  I remember my mom handing me a box of tampons, and I was in their bathroom with no idea where to put it.  Mom was on the other side of the door saying "yeah, I'm not going to help you put it in."  I wore a pad and still went to the lock in, but I couldn't go swimming.  I told everyone that I had an ear infection, and that's why I didn't get in the pool.
  • I was 12 and noticed when I was babysitting my cousins.  No big deal, but I had a 4 hour Bronze Medallion swimming class the next morning.  I was in the bathroom before class reading the directions inside the tampon box.  I messed up the first one, but got it on the second go.  I couldn't miss class, so I was on tampons from day 1.    I was terrified of TSS though, so used pads over night

  • Y'all, I was thirteen, I think, and I had it for three months before I knew what the fuck was going on. My mom hadn't had "the talk" with me yet (we were homeschooled and I was a weird kid who didn't really have friends, so I'd never thought to ask, and my mom is kind of the person who'll only talk about that if she's asked).

I finally said something to my younger brother (who was, like, 9) the third month, and he was like, "Whoa, something's really wrong, why haven't you told Mom yet?"

"Because I didn't want to worry her."

My mother about died when she heard that. She'd been worried that I hadn't already come to her, because she got hers at, like, eleven or so.

I've never told anyone IRL about that. It's kind of really embarrassing that I didn't know at thirteen how babies were made. BUT IN MY DEFENSE I ...was a really weird child.

  • This sounds so bad but I honestly can't remember. This happens quite a bit. My mom will mention some place we went or something I did, I can never remember it.
  • I was 14 and I was like finally... I was the last of my friends to get it.  I told my mom she gave me pads and that was that.  My mom just gave me pads because that was all she ever used, in college began shopping on my own and bought tampons.

    Anniversary

  • I was 10 when I got mine. The morning before the biggest swim meet I was supposed to be in. My mom wanted to show me how to use tampons correctly - but I didn't want her to. ***Possible TIM here*** So I just kinda stuck the tampons between the lips instead of where tampons are supposed to go. And went to the swim meet.

How that thing stayed where it did is a miracle. I figured out the next day how to use tampons correctly.

  • I was 14 and had just broken my wrist (like the day before).   My mom had a hysterectomy when I was about 7.   She had never used tampons.  She had bought pads for when then day came.   And not the nice thin pads we have now.   They were huge.    I had to beg to get tampons.

I was lucky,  No PMS, no skin changes, no cramps, no bloating, very light flow. I never knew when it was coming. I had no symptoms and I was not regular (21-35 day cycles).

My sister wasn't so lucky.  She got every symptom know to man.  Horrible camps that kept her out of school, acne, heavy flow, came every 2 weeks for a while.  You name it it happened to her.   Poor girl.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I got mine when I was 12 and then nothing until I was 16. When I first got it, my mom told my grandma who then told the entire family and my uncle came up to me and said "congratulations, you are now a woman". Ewwww.

My friends father announced hers to all four older brothers and picked her up and danced around the kitchen yelling my daughters a woman! My daughters a woman!

.... She practically died from embarrassment that day.

God I hate this saying.  No sorry, I am not a woman just because I now bleed from my vag every month.  I was a woman the moment my Mom pushed me out into the world because, you know, that is my sex.

I got mine at my Grandma's house when I was 11.  My Mom was on a road trip with my Grandfather, and I felt too awkward to talk to my Grandmother about it.

It was horrible.  I was bleeding like no tomorrow, I had cramps that made me throw up, the works.  It was so bad I locked myself in the bathroom and just sat on the toilet for like, two hours.  My grandmother also had a habit of knocking on the door whenever you took more than like, seven minutes, to go to the restroom.

"Are you okay!?  Are you having a bowel movement?  Have you been eating fiber?  You should eat more fiber."

I had to fashion my own pads out of her eco-friendly 1 ply toilet paper for a week.
