Hi everyone,
We are planning on having our wedding at a state park at their amphitheater.....the way that the the amphitheater is set up is there is kind of like stone rows that they use as seating.....If I where to put chairs on the very first part (the section that is closest to the amphitheater) then I would need to put chairs up the entire thing, which could get dangerous considering that it is stone and very not level.
My wedding will be in September so it may be a little chilly and I will have some older guests (mainly my grandparents) attending.  What are some alternatives to chairs?  I thought maybe some throw pillows or blankets.....like set out a basket with them in and if guests want to use them they can.
The two pictures below are what the amphitheater and "rows" look like to paint a better picture for everyone.
Thank you in advance.

Re: State Park Amphitheater Ceremony Seating

  • I think putting pillows and blankets out is a really good idea. How long will your ceremony be?
  • It will be about 20-30 minutes
  • Pretty venue!!

I'd be more worried about people sitting on the rocks in nice clothes (snags, dirt, etc.) than that it's a hard surface. Unless someone splurges for the padded chairs, they're sitting on hard plastic anyway. So I agree you can skip the chairs and have people sit on the seating provided by the amphitheater, but I would find a way to put something down on the seats.

I went to a wedding this summer where they got married in a park and set up picnic tables as seating. They went to goodwill and bought a bunch of bed sheets, cut them into strips and covered the benches so people's nice wedding clothes didn't get dirty. Everyone was talking about how creative and considerate it was.

You could buy a couple of those chair cushions for the older folks and have them already at their seats if you want. I like the idea of blankets, too. But you really should have a set temperature/conditions where you initiate your plan B so people aren't outside if it's too cold.

  • If it is chilly, keep in mind that the rock people are sitting on is going to be cold and sitting on something cold for 40-45 minutes is not comfortable!

Yeah...that's why I'm kind of thinking maybe both pillows and blankets?
The ceremony should be no longer than 30 minutes, but I know that could get kind of long sitting on a cold rock.
Do you think we could use body pillows as seating and have them laid out already and then provide blankets in case any one feels they need them?
Unfortunately, the state park doesn't have any fully enclosed shelters for me to use as a back up in case if it rains.  They do allow us to use a basic covered shelter, but i'm not sure if that's enough.

So what is your backup plan in case of rain.  Rain can be a couple of sprinkles, a light mist, a steady downpour, or torrential flooding from the gates of Hell.  You need a good backup plan in case of rain.

How far is the amphitheater from your guests cars?  Would they have to walk quite a distance in rain to get back to their cars or is the parking lot right there?

I really, really encourage you to have a strong backup plan - you can't just hope it doesn't rain, you have to have a plan you can put into place with a couple of phone calls.
