Who Cleans Up the Petal Mess?

We're getting married inside a church and we have 2 little flower girls. If I give them petals to toss as they walk down the aisle, who cleans that up after the ceremony? My fiance works at the church we're getting married so I don't want to tick anyone off by leaving a mess. I realize this may be a silly question...lol

Also, what are alternatives to the petal toss? Why do we even have flower girls?! ;)

Re: Who Cleans Up the Petal Mess?

  • Your flower girls can carry mini bouquets if you prefer.  This is probably the most common alternative to the petal toss as far as I know.

As to who cleans it up, I have no idea.  I imagine that any venue in which weddings are conducted know that petal mess is a possibility and plan accordingly.

  • Well it really depends on your church.  Some churches have an events coordinator or staff that will clean up after a wedding.  Others expect the couple to figure the cleaning situation out.  So you need to ask your church

Does your church have carpet by any chance?  If so I would dissuade you from using colored petals because when you step on a real flower petal the color can and will bleed into carpet.  If you don't have carpet but rather tile or wood, just be careful walking on petals because they can make you slip.

  • You should check with your church. Part of the payment for our ceremony includes a custodian. Perhaps yours does too!

Also ask if you can use real or fake petals. Our church doesn't allow real petals as they can stain the carpet.

  • Yes, you def need to ask the church.  My flower girl carried a pomander to avoid dealing with petal clean up.
  • my flower girl was young, so we had petals already on the aisle and our flower girl carried a little basket of flowers.  As for cleanup, the wedding coordinator did that.  Best to ask your church was their protocol is.

  • Check with your church first to find out if they even allow you to toss petals (most churches I know don't).
