Giggle of the day

We're suddenly getting cards with checks in them from people not attending the wedding. Very sweet. (Oddly, but possibly important for context, we've received several gifts but none from his side yet.)

The common theme: they all leave a critical letter out of FI's last name. The letter then turns his last name from an innocuous last name to a slur in his native language (Spanish).

Fortunately, he has a sense of humor about it.

What funny stuff have you seen lately?

Re: Giggle of the day

  • Yesterday we were at a little dinner party thing and some guy comes up to FI and starts rambling half of a conversation. We were really confused until another guy came up and said "Not (FI's name), the other Mexican guy." FI is Algonquin, but he is always mistaken for Mexican. Especially since our group of friends are all white and black people.

Not really that funny but it's related to your Mexican story. I'm really bad at telling stories.

That's got to get very annoying!

These cards have all been from friends of my parents who haven't actually met him yet. Honest mistakes and- if I'm being honest- one that I made when we first started dating. That's why I think it's kinda funny.

  • LOL. Yesterday I was talking with 2 of my coworkers. One of them asked how my parents feel about me (Dominican) marrying FI (Puerto Rican). My other coworker overheard and was like, "Pinkcow, aren't you Puerto Rican?" And my other coworker chimed in "Oh Geez, no she's not she's Dominican." My other coworker then responded "But you're so light skinned!"

You are like my life twin. I'm from Mauritius and people who know where it is always think that everyone from there is Black. When they see me they're like "but you're kind of pale. You must be a mix or something right?". Anybody can be born anywhere now jackass. Regardless of skin colour.

    Yikes!

FI's 2 brothers (they're all Mexican) married 2 sisters who are Puerto Rican. Because the Puerto Rican side has more family in the area, their family gatherings are this odd combination of Puerto Rican and Mexican. Even when there are huge parties, I'm the only white person around. It's a lot of fun but I catch everyone by surprise.

I keep being told by the Mexicans that Dominicans make arroz better than the Puerto Ricans (FI's sister used to date a Dominican). Since I can't imagine anything better than arroz con gandules, I need a recipe...

Don't even get me started on the skin color comments. FI is naturally very dark and has always gotten teased about it. I'm whiter than white. We get comments constantly from his family. I love them all but this drives me batty.

Sometimes I can't believe the stuff that comes out of people's mouth!

@wandjune6, I remember you mentioning about some of the comments from his family in other posts. More power to you, because that would drive me insane!

Why does your FI get teased about it? Is it because of the same reason I saw more than once in Black families where the darkest child will be made fun of by his "lighter" siblings and parents? How is being dark such a bad thing? It's sad to see how micro racism starts within a family unit itself.

You got it. Fortunately, it doesn't bother him. Unlike his brothers and sister, he looks just like his dad (long deceased) and he's proud of that. It also helps that he's the hot brother  :)

Now that they know it bothers me, his family has mostly stopped with the comments. They usually only say something when he's gotten a lot of sun. His son (much lighter, even than his mom) keeps making comments though. We've both talked to him about it but his mama (FI's ex, a complete piece of garbage) keeps telling him that "dark is ugly." A classy woman...

I was hoping to turn this into a funny thread!

That's disgusting. Why would you ever put an idea like that in a child's head. Unfortunately, it's the same way in Mauritius. It is considered over there that the lighter you are the prettier you are. It's really really sad. I guess most of East Asia is like that to. All those products to lighten the skin scare the hell out of me.

I think it's prominent in a lot of cultures. I understand it from a cultural/anthropological perspective (mainly from school) but it seems ridiculous to me.

My aunt (uncle's wife) and her sister visited from Japan years ago. I knew my aunt but never met her sister and was surprised to see that she had what looked like a severe skin disease. I found out later that it was significant scarring from a skin lightener that she tried back in the 80's. She's still a beautiful woman but she clearly caused herself a ton of pain trying to change her appearance. They're both crazy smart, successful women so it amazes me that she would do that to herself.

Yes i can see it from a cultural point of view as well and it doesn't seem to subside even in 2014. I wonder if we'll ever see each other as beautiful regardless of our pigment concentration. Crazy story about the Japan lady...but it's where these products stem from. At the base, the BB cream was a Korean balm that predominantly whitened the skin before it became all those things we now know of in the UK and the US.
