thoughts about save the date magnets (and where to buy?)

What are everyone's thoughts on doing magnets for the save the date cards (so the card is a magnet)? I saw one recently on a friend's fridge, and loved it, so I'm seriously considering doing it for my wedding. I always put any save the dates I receive on my fridge anyway, and I love keepsake magnets. Another friend though said it was "presumptuous" to send a magnet because not everyone will want to put the card on the fridge. I think she's being a bit sensitive though--people who don't want a magnet can trash it or put it wherever they store their normal cards.

Thoughts? And for those of you who who did save the date magnets, where did you buy them? I saw vistaprint has great deals, but any other options? I am looking for something high quality, but not ridiculously expensive.

Re: thoughts about save the date magnets (and where to buy?)

  • Yeah, I think your friend is being a bit sensitive about the whole magnet STD.  Like you said, if someone doesn't want to put it up on their fridge then they will either put it somewhere else or make a mark on their calendar and then chuck the STD.

I have received quite a few magnet STDs.  I put them on my fridge and then once the wedding is over with I chuck them.  I have never found any to be useful in really holding anything to the fridge (the magnet is just not that powerful) and honestly, I hate clutter and keeping someone's magnet STD just seems silly.  If I wanted to keep anything as a keepsake I would keep their wedding invite.

Honestly, I think Vistaprint is your best bet.  You need to remember that most people will just chuck them once your wedding is done and over with so you really don't want to spend a ridiculous amount of money on something that no one cares that much about (they only care about the date) and will most likely toss in the trash.

  • I prefer to receive magnet STD. I too put them on the fridge anyway and at least if they're a magnet, the wont fall off or be too heavy.

We ordered magnet STDs from vistaprint. We had a friend design them and we uploaded our image. We used the postcard magnet and ordered A2 size envelopes (100 for $10 on Amazon) They were good quality, especially for the price.
  • I agree with your friend.  I do not want people's pictures or anything on my fridge.  I would throw it out or possibly put it in a drawer somewhere if you were super close to me.

  • I like the idea. I always put STDs on the fridge as a reminder so one stop shop of a magnet is great.  If someone doesn't like magnets they don't have to display it!

We just did a postcard card mostly because I really didn't want to spend $$ on STDs anyway but FI wanted them so we did VistaPrint 50 postcards for $6 (sale).  VP has magnets for a good price too, I was just being cheap, errr, frugal :)

  • I used magnet street, and they aren't extremely flimsy. I ordered their smallest size (no photo) and they were $145 for (I think) 60. However, I had not heard of vistaprint until recently so I don't know how they compare!
  • Wow, your magnet street magnets were that much?  I got ours there, too, and it was $68, including shipping, for 50, plus they accidentally sent 60 instead.  I waited until Labor Day when there was a sale.
  • Looked into it more closely - I actually got 75. And I bought the return address labels too which were $25. Here I thought I was being so helpful by looking at my budget spreadsheet before responding :)
  • I like STD magnets and put them on my fridge. Don't send your friend one, though.

  • I'm planning to do a save the date magnet also! Several friends have done them in the past and I have kept them as keepsakes of their weddings. I like the convenience of having it on the fridge as a reminder. I'm getting mine from http://www.magnetstreet.com/. I also considered http://www.agiftfulheart.com/.
  • We loved our Vistaprint magnets.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • We also did Vistaprint magnets and they came out great.  We ordered 100, and along with (free) envelopes and matching return address stickers, they came out to around $80.  They're also having a sale right now!

  • We ordered from A Giftful Heart. We spent about $140 for 70 magnets. But, we got the pretty shimmer envelopes and the attach cards with the details of the STD. Here's an example: http://www.agiftfulheart.com/rustic-heart-save-the-date-magnet.html They were really good quality and we had the money in the budget to splurge on it, so we did. I never hear of them on these boards, but we were really pleased.
  • Thanks everyone! I'll check out vistaprint, a giftful heart, and magnet street. They all seem to have great options :).
  • I'm late, but we ordered our magnet STDs from MagnetStreet and everyone has raved about them. They aren't flimsy at all, stick well, and printed beautifully. I definitely recommend them to everyone.
  • I like STD magnets and have put them on my fridge whenever I've received one. I mean, I'm not going to keep it forever, but probably at least until the wedding. We get so much mail and if not for the magnet I would put a card or postcard in a "safe place" and promptly forget where I put it.

  • Just ordered ours through MagnetStreet.  100 with a 15% off coupon came out to be about $103.  I ordered address labels and sealing stickers on top of that.  Should be arriving in the next few days.

Update:  got my STD magnets from Vistaprint. I ordered during their 60% off sale and got 50 for about $20. Paid another $25 for nicer envelopes. Magnets came in and look great. Great deal!

I got mine through Vistaprint, too.  They look awesome, and a ton of people have complimented me on them!
  • Not sure if you're still looking for ideas but I ordered my save the date magnets from Wedding paper divas. They were personalized with our engagement photos and came out great! I had a coupon and only spent $115 for 75 of them.
  • I ended up making my own magnets.

I designed what I wanted in Microsoft word and sized them to be about 2x3 inches and printed 8 to a page on heavy cardstock at Staples which cost me about $5.

I got a roll of adhesive magnet sheet from Hobby Lobby (originally 9.99 but with a 40% off coupon so about $6 for that).

Cut out images and stuck them to the magnet sheet. Then cut magnet sheet around images.

I think I got 37 to fit on the 1ftx2ft sheet.

In then end I only spent about $11 making each magnet .30ish.

They look great!! and I stuck all 37 on my fridge until Im ready to put them into cards to send. :)
