Let's talk about shoes, baby

What shoes are you wearing/did you wear with your wedding dress?  How did you balance the need for attractive shoes with the need for shoes that won't attack your feet or fall off altogether when you're walking down the aisle or busting a move?

For example, I love D'Orsay style pumps but suspect they are not the most secure things ever.

  • I'd probably not go with D'Orsay myself, as they're usually pointed toe and I think that's better for the office/trousers than with gowns, personally.

I bought these. They have a 4.5 inch heel but a two-inch platform on the toe so they are really comfortable - my foot isn't at a crazy sharp angle to the floor like in real stilettos. They're almost like walking in flats, really. But I wear heels a lot, all day at the office and whenever I go out at night, so I'm not worried about wearing them all day. I wear them a lot to go dancing and have never had a problem, so I suspect practice makes perfect.

  • I designed my own at Shoes of Prey.  Everything was on sale at the time.  I'd pretty much given up finding anything I liked in an ideal heel height because I really don't want to trip over.  I've had other shoes from the company, and they've been comfortable.  The ruby slipper thing is sort of a family joke going back to when I played Dorothy in an elementary school production of the Wizard of Oz.

  • I've got a 4.5 inch red heel that I'm going to wear most of the time, but I also got an awesome pair of patent red flats from Tieks for when my feet start to hurt.
  • I wore nude patent leather wedge sandals for the ceremony, which was supposed to be outside, so they were secure on my foot and didn't sink into the grass.

I switched to aqua suede pumps for the reception, with ball of foot cushions and heel pads. I still ended up kicking them off and going barefoot to dance.

  • I'm more than likely going with Hey Lady Shoes and one of their flats that they make.

I plan on wearing flats for both the wedding and reception as having multiple orthopedic surgeries my body can't take heels, plus FI is already my size without heels. I also wanted something I knew I would wear again rather than sell, throw back into the box, or throw away.

  • These are my shoes, I bought them a few  years ago and have worn the crap out of them so they are already super comfy. And at a 5 inch heel, I know I won't look like a little girl standing at the altar with FI who is 6'2 (I'm only 5'0)
  • I am not good in heels so I got low purple ones, 2.5 inch, and then changed into silver wedge flip flops for dancing.
  • I wore 3 in t-straps with a very thick heel, as our ceremony was outside.

  • I wore heels during the ceremony and flats at the reception.
  • I bought these.  How I balanced comfort was by getting one with a low heel and an ankle strap.  No way was I wearing pumps or a stiletto.

  • I actually have a pointed-toe D'Orsay pump that I LOVE but after wearing them around the house and to a couple dance lessons, I've finally faced facts that they just don't stay on as much as I want them to. I'm so worried I'm going to step right out of the shoe. I'm really bummed, as I wanted a pointed toe. I love the look of the point of the toe peaking out under the gown when you walk, and also I wanted a closed toe as the wedding is in November. However, I just got a pair JUST like the ones posted directly above, and they fit so well and stay on so well. I'll definitely be wearing them instead.

I would never take off my shoes and go barefoot or switch to flip flops (flip flops are for the beach or the pool only!) to a formal event on a regular day, nevermind my wedding day. To me, it's like you may as well just wear a sign that says "I didn't plan ahead" or "I chose beauty over substance". There are plenty of attractive and yet still functional shoes in this world--I believe we should be letting the shoe designers know this is what we want, instead of wearing shoes we can barely walk in and need to take off to dance in!
  • So many people on here talk about changing from heels to flats... but what do you all do about your dress? Doesn't it drag on the floor when you change?

I went with a Betsy Johnson 3.5" heel (which kills me... I hate being short and never wear heels that low!) and an ankle strap. I've worn them out at night and they are super comfortable. I also bought some white wedge converse to change into if we decide to after party at the sports bar next to our venue. They are 3" though, and I'm still nervous about my gown dragging.
  • I have a short dress, so I don't have to worry about the dress dragging.  I would normally not change into flats at all, but we will be in Vegas and likely be walking quite a bit that night.
  • I didn't have a need for stylish since you could t see them, even when I walked. So I wore white flip flops with stones and then low white tennis shoes (built like Keds, but leather) with tule laces out that night.

    I have wondered this myself.

On the d'orsay -- I have actually seen a lot of d'orsay's with either peep toes or rounded toes.

I have also considered getting something with straps, thought being that if something goes wrong down there with my shoe it will be hard to get to.

  • Here are pictures of the heels and flats I got.
  • My wedding was on grass at a horse estate, so I wanted something pretty, stable, and that I'd wear again.  Went for metallic Gucci horse bit wedges.  Equestrian theme, comfy to walk in, didn't sink into grass, and not something fabric/white so I'll wear again.

  • My wedding shoes are 4.5" heels... I wanted to switch to the sparkly betsey johnson flats with ankle strap. But then my dress would drag and look so bad. I plan to just get through the night in these. They are comfortable. More comfortable than any halloween costume Ive ever worn anyway and I get through that day.
  • I got these for my wedding - it's a boardwalk with wood planks and I didn't want to risk a caught heel or anything.  I will have flip flops too just in case it's too much for my poor ankle.

A little bit, but it wasn't a big deal.

  • I got these for my wedding. For platforms, they're surprisingly comfortable and I don't have a hard time walking in them. I don't plan on changing shoes even though I am having a second outfit change for the reception.
  • I knew I wanted heels, which I normally don't wear, but wasn't willing to sacrifice comfort. So, I did research on most comfortable brands/designers. I ended up getting a pair of blue super comfy designer pumps at an outlet store for a great price.  They were normally around $500, I paid $180.  That's still an expensive pair of shoes for me, but I made sure to get ones that look awesome, were versatile and could be worn again.  They are now my go-to dress shoes and wear them whenever I dress up, since I know they won't kill my feet.  I figured that if I could spend $1200 on my dress that I'll only wear once, it's perfectly logical to be able to spend $200 on a pair of shoes that will help me enjoy my day and that I will actually wear again after the wedding.

  • I went with flats, because I like how much taller FI is than I (just four inches, but still).  I just grabbed a comfy pair of flats, and then went crazy with the mod podge and glitter.

Excuse the bad lighting - they're actually bright blue.

I'm curious to know the brand?
