Small, dark space decoration ideas?

Hello all!

I'm going to have my wedding in June of 2016, so I have time, but I do enjoy planning head and getting a vision in mind.

For my small wedding (max of 50 people total) I'm going to have a small reception room.  In fact, the max total of people is because that is all we will be able to safely and comfortably fit into the reception.  While I don't have the dimensions of the reception room, I'm hoping that the head count can give you an idea.

How, being at a chocolate restaurant, it makes perfect sense to have the room be a chocolaty brown, and it is accented with a sort of teal color.

My wedding is going to be low budget, but I need SOMETHING to help decorate the room without overwhelming it.  Otherwise, it will look a bit plain for a reception.  I do plan on having small reception flowers and candles on the tables, but I feel like the room will be needing more.

Any recommendations on ideas I can look into for jazzing up my reception without overwhelming it?

  • I am a fan of using color linens and overlays to tie the decoration together. Is there anything in the room right now?
  • Are there any pictures of the room?  You might find some on their website or something.

  • A wedding I went to last year had an accent wall behind their altar space with white lights and tulle hung from the ceiling, and it was GORGEOUS. Very simple, but high impact and created a significant amount of light. Could you do that somewhere in the reception room?
  • If it's small, twinkle lights or minimal but strategically placed uplighting should run fairly cheap.

Also, are you allowed to have candles? I love a surplus of candles to brighten a room.

  • Yup, pp, I was going to say uplighting as well. Often, the canister lights can be purchased at decent prices from Home Depot.
