Hello! I am getting married in January on the 24th, 2015. I am so excited! However, at this point in both our jobs, we are unable to take a nice honeymoon. We both love the beach, but winter isn't a good idea at that time of year. So, we're thinking of a three or four-day getaway. We live in San Antonio... Any input or ideas are are welcome! An FYI, we're on a tight budget...

  • Does your budget allow you to book a flight?  What about Caye Caulker in Belize - laid back beach area with places as cheap as $20/night when I went in 2011.  Also, you could instead save up for a honeymoon when you are allowed more time off work (or have more funds).  Also, a honeymoon doesn't have to be beaches (you can do that anytime)!  If you enjoy skiing, what about a trip to CO, MT, or VT?  Or, is there a place in TX you could drive to that is known as a vacation destination with a B&B, cute cafes, and some shopping you could do?
  • You could spend a romantic weekend in the French Quarter! It's only about an 8 hr drive from San Antonio to New Orleans, right? Could you hop a quick, moderately-priced flight there, if you don't want to road trip it?

How about Big Bend? Winter is the best time to go there. Look at The Gage hotel (~$200 per night) in Marathon or some of the nice ranches in the area but they might be more expensive.

Or drive to Santa Fe NM (we drive from Houston) and go skiing, shopping on canyon road and at the square

    SF Hotels:

    • Two years ago in Feb El Rey hotel had very reasonable rates. They are expensive in summer.
    • Old Pecos Trail is reasonable (~$100) walk up rates have been even cheaper.

    Great restaurants in Santa Fe

    • Harry's Roadhouse - great for bfast lunch and dinner. A foodie place
    • Maria's - great NM food (substituteyour side dishes and get the pasole) and a large margarita menu
    • Gabriels - N food but a iner restaurant. Make guac at your table.
    • The Depot

We did a small trip after our wedding we called our mini-moon and considered our big beach trip to Costa Rica  13 months later our HM.

  • Another thought is a B&B in Fredricksberg if you want something really close.

Further away is Carlsbad in NM but the hotels there are not great and kind of pricey for chains. If you like caves this is a great place for a short/weekend visit. Temperature is always the same in the cave. You can buy tickets for tours ahead of time on line.
