"Formal attire" is what's requested by rude people who think you can't be trusted to dress yourself appropriately, and don't realize that "black tie" is the only type of attire which can be specified as any other classification doesn't have or require defined guidelines.

Generally speaking, although there are no defined guidelines around it, you'll be fine with women in cocktail dresses and men in suits.
