Insuring someone else's car?

Re: Insuring someone else's car?

  • I realize I'm late to the thread, but I'm really glad you didn't do this.

Insurance companies call it "misrepresentation" and will drop you like a hot potato. The vehicle is principally garaged at his house, not yours. Additionally, his name is on the title, not yours. They will also ask about the primary driver.

I used to work for an insurance company, and we'd send notices to Underwriting for stuff like this all the time. It was really easy to figure out who actually owns/drives the vehicle and/or where it's principally garaged once there was an accident and we had a police report in our hands.

We ran into this in the Detroit area ALL the TIME. People would say their vehicle was at an address in the suburbs to save money on their insurance.

I am so, so glad you told him no, because it could affect your future insurability, not just his.
