Wedding Video

We are having an out-of-state wedding with close friends and family before having a big reception back home later. I want video of the wedding to play at our reception a week later. I have experience in video editing and a person who will video for us. I will have time off all that next week, we are not going on our honeymoon until later. I don't feel like a professional would be able to get all of our footage back to us by the next week, and if they did, they would probably charge extra. Most I've seen already charge $700 or more, and that's not in our budget.

Any suggestions for good video cameras or tips for filming the day of?

Re: Wedding Video

  • I don't recommend doing this. You should not play a video for your guests who were not invited to the actual ceremony. You can have photos out or you could have a video on a computer/ iPad playing in the corner, but you shouldn't force your guests to sit through a video of an event they weren't invited to attend.

You should hire a pro to do the filming or not do it. You should not a ask guests to work during the ceremony. You will not get footage that anyone, except maybe you and your FI, will want to watch if you have non-pro or you just setup stationary cameras.

I'm sorry, but I think you should just skip it. Above all do not force your AHR guests to sit through a video of your wedding, it's rude. GL! :)

  • You might be interested in a wedding video app so that all your friends and family can contribute to the video. My friend used WeddingMix at her destination wedding last month and it was super fun!

everyone already was already taking video/pics throughout the day  so she got a TON of awesome footage of the recpetion dancing. It was also convenient bc everyone could just download the app before they traveled.

Hope this helped you get the wedding video u want! :)

Thanks, I will definitely look into that! :)
  • Look for "same day edit"  It's like a short video of your entire day.  I think it might be pricey, but the quality is amazing.

They have the video ready by your reception the same day.

On a side note, my fiance did video at a friend's wedding (she didn't want to pay for video and knew the quality wouldn't be great) and if you don't have great microphones, you won't hear everything that well.  He did the ceremony, first dance, speeches, bouquet toss and garter toss, and the other parent dances and you could hear everything.  The video was decent quality (he used a DSLR camera in video mode), but it wasn't worthy to show friends and family. Just nice for the bride and groom to look back.

A "same day edit" is not what the video above is - same day edit is where they shoot and edit the footage on the same day and it is available for viewing the same day.

The above video is wedding montage video or highlights reel - different videographers call it different things.

A same day edit is actually going to reduce the quality bc it is done in a hurry and haphazardly in most cases - most videogs don't offer this option bc it is so difficult.

That's a same day edit- trust me.  That's what the SDE stands for in Krystal & Ryan //
SDE.  This photographer/videographer offers this service (it's expensive but they are amazing at what they do so most people go for it) They do video up until your first dance and then finish editing it so half way through the reception so you can view it (a lot of couples actually show this at their reception) I've been to one wedding where the video was shown to us and we all cried because it was so beautiful.

I actually went with my sister in-law and her (now) husband to their appointment and they explained the SDE to me.  I've seen a few videographers offer this option and some come out better than others- but from the ones I've seen, it doesn't really reduce quality (at least the one above you can tell that the quality is actually pretty amazing for something put together in just a few hours)

It is rare for a videographer to offer this - trust me I know - I work in the video industry, but not weddings. The issue here is that SDE videos are not common and telling people to ask for one without them understanding what they are could cause disappointment and unnecessary costs.

On a side not, I would never want to be forced to sit through someone's video at the reception. I just saw the ceremony in person, I don't need to watch a video of it. It is very AW for a B&G to force their guests to sit and watch a video - just let them enjoy the reception. A wedding video is for you, not for you to force people to view it. Send people the link afterwards and if they want to watch it they can.

IMHO, lurkers and OP, save your money and let you videog have the time needed to do a proper edit and get the finished product a week or so later. A SDE is going to cost a lot more and really isn't needed.

  • I agree it's weird to force your guests to sit through a short video, but on the other hand- it's moments that your family missed, and it's pretty much like a music video of your wedding day.  Making them sit through your full wedding video is much more torturous.

I only enjoy the SDE because it gives you a quick overview of your wedding.  No need to sit through hours of footage from that day.  I'm not having a videoagrapher because my fiance and I aren't the type who will watch the video over and over again which is the only way to justify the high price tag.
