Blue Orchids...in October?

Hi Everyone,

Just got engaged! I am just horrible with colors, etc. All I know is that I love blue orchids! Is that even possible in October? I'm having a hard time coming up with a color pallet that doesn't look ridiculous.

Re: Blue Orchids...in October?

  • I've heard that orchids are like roses, meaning they are often grown in greenhouses so they are readily available all year long. I heard that from my grandmother, so I'm not sure how true that really is! But I think it would definitely be possible to get them during October; it just might be a little pricier.

  • Yes, getting blue orchids in October is completely possible.  Flowers that florists get from wholesalers are typically grown in Mexico so they can grow all year round due to the climate.

FYI, blue orchids are only blue because they are dyed that way.

What do you mean about coming up with a color pallet that doesn't look ridiculous?

This is off topic from what the OP posted so sorry for hijacking your thread OP, but I have a question about blue orchids.

@maggie0829 - I see potted orchids at a flower shop near me that has blue orchids. They look gorgeous and I want to buy one, but are they all dyed? So if I buy it, when it blooms next year will they not be blue?

  • @tammym1001 - the orchids in the pot are actually injected with dye to make them that color.  When new flowers bloom they will be white.  Orchids lack the genes to bloom in blue or black so any orchid that is blue was dyed that way.  But there are also people who are trying to genetically alter the plant so that it does bloom in either black or blue.

  • Man that sucks! It's a beautiful plant, but they are pretty pricey and now I'm not going to buy one if it's just going to be plain white next year. I can get plain white for like a quarter of the price they are asking for the blue ones.

  • Blue is totally ok, it is your wedding. In terms of color matching, blue goes great with hues of yellow and red which are colors of the Fall. But again there are darker colors of blue, green and violet that just look amazing when next to each other. Contrast is ok.
  • We're doing the blue orchids and it's this weekend. No problem getting them at all.
    They're available year round.

Try and get deals with your flowers. I ended up getting all my flowers for less than $600 and that included all the corsages, boutinieres, bouquets, toss bouquet and 100 bulk orchid stems.
