Day of coordinator?

We are hosting a formal (as in pre-planned, cards sent out with the wedding invites, etc) after party at my beach house the evening of my morning wedding. My whole family is attending the wedding about an hour away from the after party location and while they have offered to set up the after party that is clearly ridiculous to ask of them. I want to hire a day of coordinator from a local college which offers an event management program. I figured it would be a good way for the student to get some experience and for us to save some money instead of hiring a professional. How much would we expect to pay for this? It is a low key BBQ but tables and decorations will need to be set up before hand. We have a planner but she is explicit to the reception venue so while she will help plan in advance she won't help set up or anything during the actual event. Also has anyone ever done anything similar?

I went to the #2 (at some aspects, #1) college for Hospitality and Event Management. I know college kids would be dying to do something like this! I would still ask for recommendations and resumes to be sure they know kind of what they're doing, maybe even see if they could have a team of 2 people depending on how much work it would entail, and as someone who was once considering a career in this, I would think around $400 was coming my way (keep in mind though, I had planned and executed a few weddings and events as an assistant at that point).

  • Somewhat unrelated...if you're going the budget route, or trying to do things without big vendors...I had some concern that you may not have considered event insurance.  Since this is at your beach house, you need it insured.  Someone trips, gets hurt, damages something...you're out the money to make it right.  Serve alcohol and your potential liability is greater.  While you look into help, definitely price insurance plans.
