Re: ,

  • Her duty is to stand up with you. She can do that just fine at 13. No need to have honorary anything because then you are ranking your BMs, and that can lead to unpleasant issues.
  • I agree with PP's. Anymore the MOH is really just a title and a speech (if you even want that). Have your sister as the MOH and keep your other girls as just bridesmaids. No need to rank them. And definitely don't have any "honorary" MOH's. The close friends you are talking about will be just as pleased to be regular BM's and will help just as much as they would if you'd named them MOH. They'll also understand why you chose your sister instead of them.

I agree, except with the marked-out part.

  • I'm probably going to ask my 9 year old goddaughter to be my maid of honor.  When her parents ask what that means, I'll inform them that she's expected to wear a pretty dress and stand next to me when I get married.  I'm sure your 13 year old sister can easily fulfill those duties as well.
  • A 13 year old Maid of Honor and 8 bridesmaids is totally fine! I think most people completely understand when family trumps friendship.

  • The only issue I could possibly see with her fulfilling her duties are if you need an adult to witness your marriage license.  While this would typically be done by the honor attendant (in states where witnesses are necessary), it's fine to ask one of the bridesmaids to witness.  No need to make up some "honorary" title over it.
  • I'm planning to ask my much younger sister to be my maid of honor. We live 3 hours apart, but talk every day, and are very close! She's only 13, and even though she may not fully understand the importance of MOH, I know it will mean the world to her and my family. Plus I can't imagine my big day without her next to me. My question---- Can I have my two closest friends being "honorary MOH" or something like that? I'm having 9 bridesmaid total. My little sister certainly can't fulfill the MOH duties, but I want her by my side on the big day. Who should I convey this to my 2 closest friends I want to fulfill the MOH duties?

....what do you think are "MOH duties"?

As PPs have pointed out, there are only two actual duties of any BM, including MOH: purchase and wear a dress (that you cleared with her and her budget previously) and show up by your side at the wedding.  I see no reason why a 13 year old can not accomplish those two things.

  • I assume you're worried your 13 year old sister won't be able to plan you a shower or a bachelorette party? I have three bridesmaids and didn't want to declare any of them a maid of honor. Even without, they got together on their own and threw me the best showerette ever. (Which I did not ask for.)

If you have 9 girlfriends that are close enough to be your bridesmaids, I'm sure one of them (if not a bunch of them) will probably be super excited to plan you the typical pre-bridal festivities! (But if they don't, they don't, whether you deemed one MOH or not.)

I have also planned and co-hosted bachelorette parties and showers for friends where I wasn't the MOH, either because there was no MOH, or because the actual MOH was out of town and not the most awesome planner.

Anybody can plan and host showers or bachelorette parties. It doesn't have to be the MOH, or even a member of the bridal party. Also, nobody is required to throw the bride a shower or a bachelorette party, because brides aren't automatically entitled to a shower or a bachelorette party. These are gifts.

2 puppy gifs is not enough.

ETA: grammar police: In the statement above, would it be "is not enough" or " are not enough" and why?

  • @KatWAG - I believe it is "are" since you are talking about more then one gif.

  • @maggie0829 darn that is what I thought, but then I changed it. It just didnt sound correct.

  • Not sure why that needed to be DD'd; nothing happened.

Things a MOH is required to do:
    Put on a dress
walk up and down an aisle
Stand at an alter for a certain amount of time
Hold one bouquet during most of this, and two bouquets at another point
    potentially hand off a ring
smile during pictures and look decently happy and sober

I think all of these things are totally within the capabilities of a normal 13 year-old girl, so it seems like you're all set!
  • I came for the DD. I can't make gifs work, but imagine something awesome with puppies and cake.
  • @loveislouder - it isn't a gif but it is still pretty darn cute :)

What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14
