"Why Engagement Rings Are a Scam"

This may have been posted before as I first saw this video about 6 months ago. But in the last month there seems to be a lot of talk about engagement rings with cost/value/size and the questions people ask. All with the implication that the bigger the diamond the better (by the people asking not the poster!), so I thought this video was quite amusing!

  • I did really enjoy that video when I first saw it. Fi (uh...DH now!!!) liked it too.
  • And I will happily keep my silver and sapphire set that cost us less than $200. And I bet @Jells2dot0 will happily keep her super classy diamond whose cost I will not even guess. Because the ring is just an object that does not define happiness. It's a symbol. A pretty, shiny symbol.

Aw, thank you for the compliment!

The video was funny. But, my DH put a lot of thought into my ring. He picked it out on his own and wanted me to have it for a reason. For that, I wouldn't give it up for the world.

Funny video, makes me very happy my FI did not spend a fortune, and he designed something meaningful to us. I'll happily keep my engagement ring!

I think the video does leave out the emotional investment that some rings have.

    ETF spelling.

  • I mean, they are, but so is first-class airfare, bottle service at clubs, $300 tasting menus...so if you personally value the ring (or whatever) enough to spend $X on it, far be it from me to tell you you're wrong.

I will admit, though, that the false scarcity/inflation/other commercial and economic concerns were about half the reason I won't wear diamonds (the other half being concerns for the environmental and humanitarian impact of diamond mining.) But that's my line in the sand, I'm not gonna judge anyone else's for theirs.
